“Yeah, well, she needs to get over it.It was years ago, and I don’t like handouts.”Dion mumbles, clearly not happy about her not taking his money.

While eating this giant cheese coated pastry, I follow Dion, or more like he drags me around to a few places speaking with the owners or management. One thing becomes clear to me, though: everyone here is familiar with him. They also seem to respect and genuinely like him, which I find odd considering all the rumors I’ve heard of him.He seems to be feared by most or portrayed as some evil monster.

As we come to one of the smaller boutique stores, he stops when Kyrio speaks.

“I’ll start loading the truck with the supplies, and meetyou back here,” he tells Dion.Dion nods, and the bell above the door sounds as he pushes it open.Dion immediately speaks with a woman in her thirties before motioning to me while I stroll around, looking at the racks. The woman smiles warmly before making her way to me, while Dion moves to sit in one of the seats, pulling his phone from his pocket. The woman asks my clothing size and then helps me find some clothes. We move about the store, and when the woman is satisfied I have everything required, she directs me toward the changing booths to try them on.As I open the curtain to step in, I pause hearing her talking to Dion.

“How many rogue women are out there at the moment?”she asks casually.

“Around twenty and eleven children,” Dion tells her.

“I have heaps of fabric offcuts that can be used to make clothes for the children that I will send back with you, and also last season’s stock that I was planning on donating, anyway.I’ll grab some boxes,” she says before quickly rushing past me to the back of the store. She opens a door, and I just notice the phone on the desk in her office when the door swings shut.Moving into the changing booth, I listen while making sure the clothes fit.The woman and Dion chat quietly as they discuss the rogue women and children.

“Last box,” the woman states as I finish trying on the last piece.“Thanks, Amanda, they’ll appreciate this,” Dion tells her.

“It was going to be thrown out anyway, might as well go to those who can use it,” she says as I step out with clothes over my arm.

I move toward the counter, setting them down, and Dion comes over to me.“They all fit?”

I nod, and the woman starts bagging and scanning them. It’s clear these two are familiar with each other, making me wonder if they were ever together. They seem quite familiar with each other.

Once she is finished bagging and Dion has paid, she hands me the bag before coming around this side of the counter to helptake the boxes out to the truck.Dion grabs two while she grabs one, both of them too distracted talking to pay much attention to me.I follow them out, setting the bag in the car, and follow them back to the store to help grab the other boxes.

When they head back out to the truck, I pause remembering the phone.I chew my lip before glancing out the window at the truck parked across the street. With one last quick glance at them, I rush out to the office I saw out back and snatch the phone. My hands shake as I stare at the screen, trying to think of whom to ring. There is only one person I know who I’m sure will answer, and her number I know off the top of my head.Grandma.

Quickly punching the number in, I listen to it ring and quickly pop my head back out the door to see if anyone is coming. When I don’t see anyone, I sneak out further, noting Kyrio and Dion are laughing and talking with Amanda still.“Come on, Grandma, pick up, pick up,” I whisper under my breath when I hear her voice.

“Hello?”

“Grandma, it’s me, Emery, I have to be quick, but I need you to get a message to whoever is at the emergency shelter,” I tell her.

“Emery?”she sighs heavily.

“I have to be quick,” I blurt, not having time to just chat.

Chapter 14

Loading the truck with all the supplies we managed toobtain while here, I speak with Amanda.Amanda is Anastasia’s older sister and luckily for her, she wasn’t home when their mother was taken, who was heavily pregnant with Anastasia at the time. She is only six years older than Anastasia, and she looks exactly like her, which is heartbreaking, but also comforting.

“How is your father?”I ask her as I pass a box to Kyrio. He takes it, stacking it into the truck’s tray.“He’s okay, he’s thinking of moving in with Kelsey.I’m just glad he’s finally moving on,” she tells me, and I nod.

“That will free up your time a little or are you planning on leaving, too?”I ask her.

She shakes her head.“No, I have the shop. And I don’t want to leave here, not even the packs are safe these days,” she sighs, and I glance at her.

“What do you mean?”I ask her.

“Oh, you haven’t heard?”she asks, and I stare at her blankly before looking at Kyrio who shrugs.

“Nightstar Pack was attacked the same night you took down Wildbane pack,” Amanda tells me.I glance at Kyrio whomoves closer to listen.

“Council put out an alert, I’m surprised you haven’t heard of it.Rumors were getting around that after you killed Alpha Michael and his Luna that your pack attacked Nightstar,” she tells me.

Now this is news to me, making me wonder why the council didn’t mention it.“Wasn’t us, we have no reason to go after them,” I remind her.

She nods.“Yeah, everyone knows that. But that is the alert that was put out on the night.Apparently Alpha Callum went on a rampage after his daughter was chosen at the annual ceremony when she didn’t return home.Alpha Callum sent his men out, and they attacked the Nightstar pack, and killed two of Alpha Farren’s best warriors.Alpha Callum claims it wasn’t him, and that Elsie, his daughter, mysteriously showed up home the following day.”She shrugs.

“Sounds mysterious,” I laugh. This drama with packs never ends.“Yeah, it is not half obvious who attacked his pack.Although I am shocked, they went back,” she adds.
