“I’m not his woman, though. I belong to no one.”
“It’s not about belonging. It’s about being under the protection of us Nmen. You and Freya are our responsibility and as the leader of our group, Thor feels the weight the heaviest. He has taken a lot of shit from the media, his father, and people in general, but I’ve known Thor his entire life and I would pick him as my ruler any day.”
I leaned my weight onto my right hip and crossed my arms. “What makes you say that?”
“He’s smart, fair, strong, and brave.”
“Hmm.”
Scratching his cheek, Indiana looked thoughtful. “Thor can be a real ass when he needs to be and that’s an important skill in a ruler. That job isn’t a popularity contest. I’ve seen him lose his temper, but his father and uncle are the same way. Those under Thor’s protection can sleep easy because he’s relentless and loyal.”
“Hmm.” I began walking again.
“You don’t believe me?” Indiana fell into step next to me.
“Thor and I have a complicated relationship. I guess where you see the loyal friend in him, I see the ass.”
Indiana laughed. “Maybe you don’t know him well enough. From his concern for you last night, I’d say you’re definitely under his protection. I got the impression you’re important to him.”
I chewed on Indiana’s words after we came back to the Blue Tower. Was I important to Thor?
The energy I picked up from him was all over the place and I had a hard time deciphering which of the emotions were his and which were mine.
I had felt other people’s desire for me before but when Thor was around me, it was more potent and affected me differently. With him I felt butterflies in my stomach and waves of heat moving up and down my spine.
My real-life experience with sex was limited, but I’d read about it for years and understood that Thor and I had what people referred to as sexual chemistry.
It was frustrating that I had to find that rare gift with someone I was so different from. I might be curious about sex, but I had meant what I told him in the night club. I would never have sex with someone who didn’t appreciate me.
Frustrated with all the questions flowing around inside my head, I decided to be brave. It was time to confront him with some tough questions.
CHAPTER 13
Mind-Reading
Thor
I was on the bed in the tiny apartment, enjoying some needed alone time, when the doorbell rang.
Convinced that it was Indiana who had come to apologize for leaving the meeting early, I opened the door forcefully.
Linea stood outside with her pretty face tilted upward. She was dressed in the same flowery pantsuit that she had on when I last saw her. She asked, “Why do you look so annoyed when I haven’t even spoken yet?”
“Ehm. No, it’s not you. I thought it was Indy.”
“Nope, just me. Is Doreen here?”
Holding on to the top edge of the door, I answered in a casual tone that hopefully didn’t reveal how fast my pulse was, now that she was near. “Nope. She’s with the other Motlanders. They’re working on some sort of skit that they want to entertain us with tonight.”
“Oh, that’s sweet of them.”
“Do you want me to leave her a message?”
“What? No, I didn’t come to speak to Doreen. I wanted to talk to you.”
Feeling pleased, I stepped back to let her enter.
“This place is identical to Celeste’s apartment. It’s cute,” Linea said as she walked further into the tiny living room, where everything was optimized to take up the least amount of space.
