It wasn’t until later, when I’d rolled off her and she lay with her head on my chest, that I had time to think about what had happened. “Linea.”

“Mmm?”

“Why does every rational thought disappear when I’m inside you?”

“What do you mean?”

“I came in you and we’re not even married yet.”

She lifted her head and met my gaze.

“You could be pregnant right now. From this time or last night.”

Biting down on her lip, she creased her brow.

“I’m sorry, Linea. We should have talked about it, but it’s like I can’t control myself when I’m with you. I want everything with you and the thought of you pregnant with my child… it’s…” I brushed her hair back. “It’s one of the reasons I knew I was in trouble back at the beach. After your first visit, I had these recurrent fantasies of impregnating you.”

“You did?”

“Yes. It made no sense because we didn’t like each other. And yet I kept having these fantasies of you and me together.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because it would have freaked you out and besides, how do you tell an almost stranger that you have dirty fantasies about them without seeming like a creep?”

Linea lowered her cheek to my chest again. “And what about now? Does the thought that I might be pregnant scare you?”

“Yes and no. I want us to have children, but I also want time alone with you before I have to share you.”

We were quiet for a while, with her nuzzling my hair, until I asked Linea, “Does it scare you?”

“Hmm… Not as much as it should. That sensation you described about feeling out of control when we’re together… it’s the same for me. I knew you were coming inside me, and yet I didn’t try to stop you. I take that as a sign that at least some part of me is ready to be a mom.”

“I want us to marry as soon as possible.”

Linea didn’t answer at first.

“Did you hear what I said?”

“Yes, I heard you. My mind was just trying to catch up. Not that long ago I thought you were a major jerk and now we’re bonding for life.”

“I probably still am a jerk at times.” I moved us to lie face to face. “But if anyone can love a flawed man, it’s you.”

Linea smiled and was just about to say something when we heard a sound that made us both stiffen.

She popped her head up. “My parents are back.”

To the soundtrack of heavy footsteps coming up the stairs, I got out of her bed and dressed in frantic movements while hissing low, “Finn can’t find us like this. You need to get dressed.”

With my t-shirt over my head, I struggled to get my left arm through the hole while pulling up my pants with my right hand at the same time. My heart was racing as I imagined Finn’s fury when he found me in his daughter’s bedroom. “Hurry!”

Linea put on her clothes with steady hands, but her hair was tousled from our lovemaking and we were running out of time.

The heavy steps came closer and then there was a knock on the door. “Honey, are you awake?”

I recognized Finn’s deep voice and knew I was screwed. This wasn’t a respectful way to court his daughter, and he had every right to be livid with me.

“Yes, I’m awake.” Linea picked up her duvet from the floor and placed it back on the bed before walking over to the door.
