Lucille’s eyes widened and I could tell she was trying to remember if she’d said Megan’s father’s name.
“That would be Doctor Singh. He’s on vacation,” Laura answered.
“Megan says that he’ll get her out of the coma.”
“How?”
“I don’t know, and I don’t know how Megan can be so sure, but she is.”
Laura was quiet for a long minute. “I don’t know. I’m so confused.”
“You promised Megan that if she wakes up you’ll take her to Iceland like she dreamed of. She says that she wants to go.”
Uncontrollable sobbing sounded from the other end and we all looked down or away.
“Laura, are you there?” I asked, but the line was disconnected.
The six of us sat in uncomfortable silence and I could sense the unease from Brody and Liam.
“Ye shouldn’t have done that,” Brody said in a low baritone voice. “That woman was already in distress and ye made it worse.”
“But what if it’s true?” Lucille defended me.
“What if it’s not?” Brody shot back.
“Fleur said some very specific things.”
“Look, there’s goin’ to be doctors with funny accents in every hospital in the UK and of course the family would play her favorite music. Those are qualified guesses, not telepathic messages from Megan,” Brody insisted.
Maximum was quick to defend me, “Fleur would never upset a grieving mother if she wasn’t sure her message was real and…” He stopped talking when Lucille’s phone lit up and she answered right away.
“Hello, Laura?”
“I’m sorry, it’s just that it’s not more than two hours since I made Megan that promise. There’s no way you could know about Iceland because I haven’t even told Jim.”
My eyes met Brody’s before moving on to Liam. They both looked stunned.
“When will Doctor Singh be back?” Lucille asked.
“I’m not sure. He’s on his honeymoon, but it’s been more than two weeks, so I can ask.”
“Okay. Tell him that Megan is counting on him to pull her back to consciousness.”
“I will. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, and remember to give Lucille an update. We’re all praying for Megan,” I said.
When we ended the call, Maximum pulled me into a long hug. “You’re effing incredible, do you know that?”
Liam lifted a bottle of Coca-Cola and leaned his neck back, taking a healthy swig before declaring, “That is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.”
“Do you still think it was wrong of me to call Laura?” Lucille asked Brody but he had his hands in his hair.
“What kind of witchery was that? Did ye two set it up?” He looked from Lucille to me and then he looked around the park. “Is this hidden camera or somethin’?”
“No, Fleur just has a gift.” Maximum picked up his phone. “Let me show you what it was like to be in South Africa with her. Here she is walking among lions.”
They all moved closer to see a video of me with the lion pride.
