“Fleur is an animal communicator,” Maximum told them, but of course, Liam already knew.

“Nathan told me, but I’m not sure I understand what that means,” Brody admitted.

“It means that she can talk to animals,” Maximum clarified.

“Hmm, so do people hire you to talk to their pets or how does it work?” The smirk on Brody’s face told me he didn’t believe in my work.

“I’m confused too,” Jacob said.

“I use telepathy to communicate with non-humans. It’s rare that I do sessions for private people who wish to speak to their pets, but I used to.”

“Wait, what about people? Can you communicate with people too?”

Maximum beamed. “You should see her around babies. They won’t stop staring at her like she’s glowing at them or something.”

Lucille, who had been on her stomach, sat up on her knees. “This is going to sound crazy, but do you think you could talk to someone in a coma?” Before I had a chance to answer, she continued. “About three weeks ago, a girl I used to babysit almost drowned. She’s only sixteen.”

“What happened?” Liam asked with concern.

“No one really knows except that she was at a party and a bunch of teenagers decided to go skinny-dipping. Megan is a good swimmer, but alcohol was involved and end of the day, one of her classmates pulled her out of the water and called an ambulance when she wasn’t breathing.”

“I’m sorry to hear about your friend,” I said with empathy. “It’s not something I specialize in, though.”

“I know, but I spoke to my mum yesterday and the doctors are preparing her family, saying that they’ll pull the plug soon. I can’t stop thinking that they might be wrong. What if Megan isn’t truly brain dead but just can’t show any signs that she’s still in there?”

“Can they do that against the family’s will?” I asked.

“Yes, in the UK the family has no say in the matter, but her mother keeps saying that she doesn’t believe Megan is brain dead even though the doctors claim she is. That’s the only reason they’ve kept her on life support this long… you know, to help her family process the grief and prepare to let go.”

I sighed. I’d practiced telepathy between humans on colleagues around the world. The results had been remarkable, but that had been between two trained communicators. I’d read about empaths connecting to people in comas, but personally, I’d never attempted it, and I had little hope that it would work. Still, I couldn’t refuse to at least try. “Do you have a picture of her?” I asked, feeling my heart overflowing with sadness for the girl and her family.

“Yes. Hang on.” Lucille fished out her phone and began scrolling until she found a picture of a beautiful, smiling girl in a kayak.

“Do you mind if I bring the picture with me?”

“No, of course not.”

“I can’t make any promises but I’m willing to try and connect to her.”

They all watched me as I walked away with Lucille’s phone to a large tree where I sat down against the tree trunk and closed my eyes to center myself.

When I felt ready, I opened my eyes and looked at the girl in the photo, reaching out to her as I would if I were connecting to a non-human.

Tears filled my eyes when a sense of complete desperation met me.

I sat quietly taking in Megan’s thoughts and feelings and when I understood her message, I promised her to relay what she’d told me.

Walking back to the others, I asked Lucille, “Can you call up Megan’s mom?”

“Yes, of course. Did you connect to Megan?” Lucille’s hands were shaking when she took her phone back and dialed Megan’s mom up, putting her on speaker.

Maximum reached out to take my hand, but I shook my head, wanting to stay tuned in on Megan’s energy.

When Laura, Megan’s mother, answered the phone, Lucille explained the situation and asked if Laura would speak to me.

Once she agreed, I spoke up.

“Laura, I’m so sorry that you’re in this situation, but I want you to know that Megan is not ready to let go. She tells me that she hears everything and that she’s grateful that you’re playing her favorite music and that you’re fighting for her life. She wants you to get a hold of the doctor with the Indian accent. He’s only been to see her a few times in the beginning, but one of the times, he talked to you and Jim so she says you should know who he is.”
