Hawk still sat on the bench, looking after the four older boys walking away. “That wasn’t very nice.”
“We only have four dirt bikes but you two could take one of the four-wheelers. You won’t win any races on them with Dove driving, but at least you can be out there with them,” Maximum suggested.
Dove gathered things from the table to carry inside. “No thanks.”
With Dove, Hawk, Calvin, and the other two workers leaving the table, Maximum moved over to sit next to me.
“Should we worry?”
“About what?”
“Don’t tell me you don’t see Dove’s infatuation with Lucas.”
I screwed my mouth to one side. “She’s so young.”
“She’s only a year younger than you were when you started dating Pierre.”
“Yes, but Lucas isn’t interested in her that way. I’m pretty sure he has a girlfriend back home. Serena said there was drama when she took him to the airport.”
Maximum raised his brow. “You really think Lucas is stupid enough to pass up someone as natural and pure as our daughter if he got the chance?”
Caressing his face, I traced his lips with my index finger. “Lucas lives in LA and is probably used to girls wearing a lot of make-up and walking around in designer clothes. We see Dove’s natural beauty, but I’m not sure a boy like him would even notice her that way.”
“So, you’re not worried?”
“Not really. She’s built him up in her mind, but now that he’s here, I’m pretty sure a dose of reality will make her infatuation fade. I say we let them spend time together and she’ll see for herself that he’s just another teenage boy.”
“I don’t know about that. He’s a Robertson, and according to Nathan both his sons are very popular among the girls at school.”
“Yes, I can imagine, but the question is how much of that popularity is connected to Gabe and Lucas being the sons of a movie star like Serena?”
“Would you let our kids go and stay for a year in Chicago and LA?”
“Would you?”
Maximum pulled me onto his lap and closed his arms around me. “From a selfish perspective, I’d say no. I prefer that they stay here with us. But I understand why they would want to try something different. Atlas was only sixteen when he moved to the US and he didn’t even stay with family.”
“He went to high school in the US?”
“No, Harvard University.”
My eyes expanded for a brief moment. “At sixteen?”
“Yes, but by then he’d already finished several college classes. We all went to college early because of our advanced learning in the cult. You know that.”
“I guess I just don’t think too much about that time of your life. It pains me that you and the others had to grow up in a cult.”
Maximum narrowed his eyes. “Do you see me as broken?”
“No. I see you as perfect.”
His hold around my body tightened as he kissed me. With our foreheads pressed against each other, his arms around my waist, and mine wrapped around his neck, we were like two odd pieces of a puzzle making a precise fit.
“Nobody is perfect,” he whispered.
A deep feeling of gratitude welled up in me, making my throat swell. “True, but two people can be perfect for each other.”
“Then you, my love, are my perfect fit.”
