I’d never thought much about kissing, but this time I wanted it to be something she would think back on with pleasure for years to come. Increasing the pressure of my lips, I focused all my energy into perfecting our kiss.
I half expected Sparrow to pull back, but she didn’t. When I nibbled on her lower lip and introduced my tongue to her, Sparrow’s curiosity drove her tongue to come say hi. There was something thrilling about knowing that I was the first person to ever kiss this striking woman.
My brain knew that she had asked for a kiss and nothing more. But my hands wanted in on the action. The moment I touched her breast, Sparrow pulled away and sat up.
I covered my eyes with a hand, wishing I could rewind that last stupid move and go back to kissing her.
“Thank you, that was…” She touched her lips. “Nice.”
“You’re a good kisser,” I complimented her.
She looked a bit flustered and clearly didn’t know what to do with herself.
“A shooting star.” My pointing upward distracted her from being self-aware. Rolling to my back, I propped my hands under my neck and talked about our tradition of making wishes upon seeing a shooting star.
“We do that too.”
“Hmm. You’ll have to find your own shooting star then. I just made a wish on that one.”
I was glad to see Sparrow relax and lie down next to me. “What did you wish for?”
“I can’t tell, or it won’t come true,” I said, knowing full well that my wish was out of my reach. Tomorrow morning Val would pick me up while Sparrow would go back to the Northlands and live her life. My burning wish that her first time would be satisfying and amazing was hard to imagine if she gave herself to one of those inexperienced, gruff Nmen.

CHAPTER 1
Morning
Old Europe – August 2466
Sparrow
Rubbing sleep from my eyes, I yawned and took in how the morning sun was warming up the valley while a few birds sat on the drone investigating what had to be a strange object to them.
The valley was as beautiful as Banni had described. Sitting inside Thor’s drone, I looked out on a sea of wildflowers in every color possible.
“Banni.” I pushed at him gently and smiled when he grunted. “Banni, wake up.”
Opening one eye, he muttered, “Is Val here yet?”
“No.”
Rolling to his side, he reached out his hand toward me and spoke in a voice raspy from sleep, “You want to kiss some more?”
“No.” I laughed and opened the door to step outside. “I want to find that river you talked about. Is it safe to wash in the water?”
“Yeah, but don’t drink from it. Hang on, I’ll come with you.”
We walked through the valley, scaring off a pair of rabbits before we dipped our toes in the river.
“You’re awfully quiet this morning,” I said, sensing a change in Banni’s mood. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
I squinted my eyes. “Don’t lie to me. I can tell that you’re upset about something. What happened? Did you get a bad message?”
“Yeah, something like that. It’s nothing for you to worry about.”
