There was nothing I could do when he carried me out of my room and down a hallway to an exit. It was cold outside and there was rain in the air, but he didn’t stop for a second. From the way he jogged with me across his shoulders, my lower ribs were hurting. The sound of a door sliding was followed by him lifting me inside a drone. It wasn’t one of the Black Ghost drones that we had arrived in.

The door closed and tears of desperation sprung from my eyes when I felt the drone lift from the ground. The man didn’t react to my sounds of protest, but at least now I could see who he was. Keith.

For at least twenty minutes he said nothing. He just sat in a seat across from me and watched me cry, wriggle, and beg with my eyes. Like a statue, he didn’t speak or show emotions. Eventually, he turned his head to look out the window, occasionally glancing back at me while waiting for me to calm down.

I was dying from heat, wrapped up in the duvet inside the toasty drone. I couldn’t tell him, but it made me stop moving and focus on breathing through my nose.

When I stopped crying, he patted my knee, and spoke. “I’m not going to hurt you, Sparrow.”

I tried speaking but all that came out were muffled sounds.

Leaning forward, Keith removed the tape from my mouth.

“I’m burning up,” I exclaimed and heaved in a deep breath.

Keith moved closer and lifted me from the seat, opening up the duvet. Underneath I was wearing pajama pants and a chemise. His eyes lingered on my right breast where the chemise was skewed and didn’t hide a thing.

“Untie me!” I demanded but he didn’t answer. Instead, he reached out and cupped my uncovered breast while raising his gaze to meet mine.

“I’m going to fulfill your wish.”

“What wish?” I shouted at him with frustration and anger.

“You asked me to take you behind a tree and fuck you.” A smile grew on his face. “I’ll fulfill your dream every day, Sparrow. I promise.” Leaning close enough that his mouth was by my ear, he squeezed my breast. “We’ll do it as soon as we’re married. None of that French bullshit with fucking around.” Leaving a kiss on my cheek, he pulled back and looked deep into my eyes. “I knew we were meant to be together the moment you told me it would be nice to have sex with me.”

“We werepretending! It wasn’t real. I don’t want you!”

His smile vanished and his lips turned into a flat line. “You’re just upset that I took you away from your friends like this. Once you get to know me better and you realize how perfect we are for each other, you’ll change your mind.”

“We arenotperfect for each other. I don’t even like you.”

“Yes, weareperfect for each other. My mother always said that sometimes a man has to show initiative and prove how much he wants his woman. That’s what I’m doing. We have so much in common.” Keith’s eyes widened and turned glassy as he spoke in a pleading tone of voice. “You said that you grew up in a forest and that you know everything about survival in nature. I’m like that too. We’re the same, Sparrow. Don’t you see?”

“Listen to me, Keith.” I blew hair out of my mouth and focused in on him. “Kidnapping is not the way to get a woman to love you. People will search for me and when they find us, you’ll go to prison.”

He smirked. “They won’t find us.”

“Even if they don’t, I’ll find a way to escape. Your plan is delusional. Turn this drone around and bring me back while there’s still time. If you do, I won’t say a thing about what happened. No one will know and you can go back to Alaska and live in peace.”

In an explosive fit of anger, Keith hammered his fist down on the seat next to him. “Do you have any idea how lonely my life was before I met you?”

I jerked back and blinked my eyes, scared of the furious man in front of me. His face turned red, matching his beard, and by his temple, an angry-looking vein popped out. Leaning his head back made his beard point straight at me while he ran both hands over his short-trimmed hair.

Tears of fear poured out from my eyes and rolled down my cheeks. “Please, please let me go.”

Shaking his head, Keith placed the tape back across my mouth, shutting me up. “I can’t do that.”

CHAPTER 14

Empty Room

Banni

I sat next to Lilly at breakfast. “You okay?”

She slowly stirred her spoon around the porridge that she was eating and answered with a tiny smile. “I’ve thought about it all night, and to be honest going to Old Europe was an escape from something that I have to face back home. Being here and going through all those impossible exercises showed me that I’m much tougher than I realized.”
