I ran my hands through my hair and leaned my head back. “Fuuck. What do I do now?”
“If she doesn’t want to talk to you, there’s not much you can do. River is stubborn and good at keeping men at a distance.”
“Maybe I could send her flowers and see if she’ll change her mind. What’s her favorite flower?”
“Parker.” Maximum gave me another look of sympathy.
“Yeah?”
“Don’t send her flowers.”
“Why not? Women love that sort of thing, don’t they?”
“Look, man. River is my sister, and I love her, but her house is like a flower shop with all her suitors sending her hopeful messages.”
“Oh.” My mouth dropped open.
“She’s used to getting over-the-top gifts, and that’s not the way to win her heart. The house she lives in was bought by a billionaire who adored her, but not even a gift worth six million could get River to date him.”
“He gave her a six-million-dollar house?”
“Six million Euros, and that was almost five years ago. Who knows what that house is worth now?”
I felt like I’d been crushed in a big wave and that the undercurrent was keeping me down. “I’m still going to keep calling her,” I declared and pushed my chair back to stand up.
“I hope she answers,” Maximum said and got up too. Moving around the table, he gave me a masculine hug. “If I could choose for my sister, I’d happily pick you.”
“Thanks, man.” I hugged him back before leaving the hotel with even heavier steps than when I first came.
