My anger with him had lessened, and I tilted my head a little. “How about we bury all the things that went wrong between us, start anew, and go slow this time?”

Nathan smiled. “I would be fine with that.”

Leaning over the table, I reached out my hand. “My name is Sydney Brown, but I go by Serena. How are you doing?”

Nathan’s large hand folded around mine as he smiled. “My name is Nathan Robertson.”

“That’s a nice name.”

“Thank you. My parents named me Nathaniel, but later my mother changed it to Liberty.”

“You’re kidding!”

“No, true story. She was inspired by a man who told her a child’s name should carry weight. My mum was of African American descent, so with her ancestor’s history of slavery, she chose Liberty as my name.”

“That’s… something.”

“It is, but I didn’t like the name, so by the time I was ten, I insisted people call me Nathan.”

Our hands were still connected when I smiled at him. “It’s very nice to meet you, Nathan.”
