“Oh, yeah?” I took a step closer to him and reached up on my toes until we were nose to nose. “Tell me how you feel.”
Nathan folded his arms around my waist and leaned his forehead against mine. “You’re like my missing half. Everything feels better when you’re near.”
“Ditto.”
“Maybe that’s what love is supposed to feel like.”
I pulled back to look at him. “Are you saying that you love me?”
Nathan let go of my waist, and his face suddenly looked guarded.
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s too soon for declarations of love.” He walked on.
“No, it’s not,” I called after him. “Not if that’s what is in your heart.” I had to run to catch up to him. Getting in front of him, I stopped him with my hands on his upper arms. “You think I’m gonna freak out and run away if you tell me you love me, but I won’t.”
Nathan watched me.
“I know we’re moving crazy fast, but we tried to slow it down, and it didn’t work. I think our souls are already intertwined and that they remember each other from past lifetimes. That’s why it feels so easy to be together. We’re like old friends that just found each other again.”
“I don’t know if I believe that, but there’s no denying that I’m drawn to you like no other.”
“See… it has to mean something.” Overflowing with inner joy, I felt like a happy elf, flashing my teeth in a broad smile and jumping up on a mossy tree log.
“Careful, it looks slippery,” Nathan warned and moved closer to offer his hand.
“I used to do this all the time as a little girl,” I said and put one foot in front of the other like a tightrope walker balancing with her hands to each side. “It’s fun. You should try it.” I’d only just finished my sentence when my foot slipped, and I fell on top of the log with a cracking sound. I screamed as I tried to grab for something, but my body was rolling down a slope and gaining speed, and then I collided with a tree, which pushed all the air from my lungs and knocked me out.
