“Why do I always attract the users? Why can’t I find someone genuinely good and kind?” River laid her head on my shoulder and spoke in a small voice.

“Don’t give up.” Kit slid down from the kitchen counter and came to stand on River’s other side. “There are good men out there.”

River lifted her gaze to meet my eyes. “I wish I could meet someone as kind as you.”

A snort escaped me. “Trust me, you don’t want a man like me. I’m troubled.”

“But all your girlfriends have always swooned over how protective and kind you are.”

“Maybe, but if you ask Serena how I treated her last night, I guarantee that she wouldn’t use the word ‘kind’.”

“Did you shout at her?”

“No.” I looked away.

“What happened?” River dried her eyes as I stepped back to give her more space.

“Nathan went up to Serena’s room.”

“Kit, don’t!” I stopped her with a hard stare.

“No, I want to hear it. What happened?” River insisted.

“Aye, tell her, Nathan.”

With reluctance, I told the truth. “I suggested to Serena that I could show her Temple Bar and she accepted. The idea was that she would change into a hoodie and jeans so we could walk around without her fans recognizing her. But once I got to her room, things happened, and the kissing from earlier in the bar continued.”

“Did you sleep with her?” There was a touch of accusation in River’s tone.

“No.” I was hoping to get away with that answer, but River wouldn’t let me.

“How far did you go with her?”

“That’s between Serena and me, but I can tell you that we were naked when I realized that she wasn’t in a relationship with Storm. From that point on, things took a weird turn.”

“Why? One would think that it’s a positive if the woman yer about to have sex with isn’t in a relationship,” Kit pointed out.

“I was confused, and when Serena understood that River wasn’t in on the scam, she was mortified. It ruined the mood, and then she questioned why I was with her if I thought she’d hurt my sister.”

River crossed her arms. “That’s a valid question. I’d like to know what you answered.”

I rubbed my neck. “I can’t remember.”

“It was last night. Of course you remember. What did you answer her?” River pressured.

“You sure you want to know?”

River narrowed her eyes and gave a single nod.

“I admitted that I find her irresistible.” My hands went up in the air as I said it. “I’m sorry, sis, but just thinking about Serena makes my heart speed up.”

River stared at me while wrinkling her nose as if the thought disgusted her. “You’re not serious right now?”

“I am.”

Her voice rose. “How long have you felt that way?”

“Since our trip to Spain.”
