“Good one.”
“Wait.” I turned my body to her. “Is that a yes?”
“What do you think?”
I didn’t know what to think and ran a hand over my short hair. “But you wanted this…. Storm… you wanted him.”
“I wouldn’t say it like that, but I’m doing my part, and we’re almost there.”
“Almost where?” I looked down at her hand. “The wedding? Are you talking about the wedding?”
“Nah…” Serena picked up the sweet drink and took one more sip. “I still think this is my favorite, but let’s try that one.” She moved a champagne glass with a pink bubbly drink to me. “Do you want to go first?”
“Sure.” Lifting the drink, I emptied half of it and pushed it back to her.
“Good?”
“Uh-huh. It’s good.”
Serena tasted it. “I agree. It’s fresh.”
“Then empty it.”
“Easy. I’ll be drunk if I keep going like this.” Serena’s movements and speech were a little slower now, and I could tell the alcohol was getting to her. “I need something to eat. I haven’t had anything since lunch.”
“What would you like?”
“A salad would be lovely. Or a burger as long as it’s vegan.”
“When did you become a vegan? You ate meat in Spain.”
“I know, but then five months ago, my trainer talked me into trying a vegan diet.” Serena leaned in and lowered her voice. “Can I tell you a secret?”
“Uh-huh.”
“I’m not very good at it. I mean, I’m trying, but so far I’ve only managed to go vegetarian.”
“What’s your downfall? Eggs?”
“No. Cheese.” Putting a finger to her lips, Serena made a shushing sound. “You can’t tell my trainer. He thinks I’m vegan.”
“Your secret is safe with me.” I mimed sealing my lips.
We were sitting very close, and it was hard to remember that I should be angry with this woman when she was so adorable and flirtatious with me.
“I’d forgotten how much fun you are,” I said and kept smiling as I touched a lock of her soft hair.
One side of her mouth tipped up as she looked down. “How come I never heard from you after Spain?”
I tilted my head and narrowed my eyes a little. “My sister wasn’t too happy with you.”
“Oh, because of the Storm thing.”
“Yes.” I shook my head a little. How could she make it sound like her breaking up River and Storm was a small thing?
“No, I can imagine. It’s a lot to ask your partner.”
“What do you mean?”
