My Calling

Nathan

It was morning, but only a sliver of light shined through the blackout curtains in the hotel room. As I came back from the bathroom, I looked around to locate the buzzing sound. Serena was still in bed, but I couldn’t decide if she was sleeping.

It sounded like the buzzing was coming from underneath the duvet.

Is she using a vibrator?

I moved closer, and with one quick movement, I yanked the duvet down to catch her red-handed.

“What are you doing?” Serena asked in a drowsy voice and lifted her head. She was in a fetal position with no vibrator in her hands.

“I thought you were using a vibrator without me.”

“Seriously? I can hardly keep up with your sex-drive. Why would I use a vibrator?”

“It’s that buzzing sound. Don’t you hear it? I thought it was coming from under the duvet.”

Serena reached down and tugged the cover back over her body.

Still determined to find the source of the buzzing, I speculated, “It must be your phone then.”

“Probably,” she said and yawned.

“Where is your phone?”

A sound that I translated to “I don’t know” came from her.

“You’re not a morning person, are you?”

This time she didn’t even answer me. Serena had closed her eyes again and was clearly not done sleeping.

From the end of the bed, I lifted the fluffy cover and searched with my hands until I found Serena’s phone. “Geezus, woman… you’ve got a billion unanswered calls and texts.”

“I’ll bet it’s that photo from last night…” she muttered with her eyes still closed. “I put the phone on silent.”

“It’s still buzzing, though.” I let her phone fall close to her arm and went to look out the window. We were on the top floor with a lovely view of Central Park. “We should go out and enjoy the day.”

“Close the curtains, you’re letting in light.”

“That’s because it’s almost ten in the morning.”

“Ten?”

“Mhmm.” My eyes took in the people biking and walking in the green park. “We could rent some bikes if you want.” I looked down to see the street in front of us. “Holy shite!!!”

This time Serena opened her eyes. “What is it?”

“You got to come and see this!”

In front of the hotel, a horde of people had gathered on both sides of the street.

Serena dressed in a black chemise that I’d peeled off her last night and came to the window. She took one peek, and then she went back to bed.

“You think they’re here because of you?” I asked.

“It’s likely.”
