We walked shoulder to shoulder when we weren’t stopping to let people pass us.

“What do you mean, your meadow?”

With an arm around his shoulder, I pulled him in and whispered in his ear, “I mated with her.”

Smiling, I continued walking, leaving him behind.

My brother was quick to catch up and spun me around. “Tell me everything.”

I grinned from ear to ear and after looking around, I gestured for us to step to the side for privacy. “She’s a goddess. So wise and innocent at the same time. There’s nothing but pureness and kindness in her.”

“And you had sex?”

“Yes, but not full intercourse. We were about to when you and Dad wouldn’t stop calling me.”

Frederick jerked his head back. “You left the meadow before you finished bonding?”

“Yes, but she confirmed that we’ve bonded, so it’s fine. I even said that she was mine and she didn’t protest.”

“Still… why the hell didn’t you go all the way if you had the chance? What a moron would give up on a chance like that?”

Rubbing my forehead, I felt stupid. “She had already given me so much. I don’t know… Dad’s call just fucked up the moment, you know?”

Frederick was looking at me with large green eyes, similar to mine. “But what are you going to do? She’s a Motlander. It’s not like you can ever truly be together.”

“I know, but…” I let my hands fall down. “There has to be a way.”

“Do you love her?”

I grabbed his shoulders and stared into his eyes. “It’s like we were made for each other. She’s so much more than a young bride could ever be.”

“How old is she?”

“A year younger than me and completely different from brides like Wilma who think they are the center of the universe.” I spoke fast. “Devina is smart and kind. I don’t always get her humor but it’s not her fault that she was born as a Motlander.”

“Hey, Starr was a young Northlander bride and I love her.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to bash your wife, but you know what I mean.”

Someone in the passing crowd shouted Frederick’s name and he raised a hand to wave back. “Later, okay?”

The man got the message and Frederick turned his focus back on me. “Tyton, listen. It doesn’t matter how amazing she is. You can’t move there, and she can’t move here. Period! If it was possible it would have happened at some point, but the wall has been there for almost two hundred fucking years. You’re risking your life here and you have to stop it!”

“That’s easy for you to say. You have Starr.”

“And you’ll have Tamara in a year.”

I took a step back and drew my eyebrows close together. “I’m not fighting in Tamara’s tournament.”

“You have to!”

“Didn’t you hear me? I just mated with Devina.”

My brother gave me a look of pity. “This isn’t going to end well, and you know it.”

The rush of euphoria that I’d felt after my time with her in the meadow was wearing off and the reality was showing its ugly face. We were close to a fence and I let myself slide down with my back to it. “Fuuuck!”

“Don’t. Drunk people might have pissed here last night.” Frederick pulled me up.
