“What if you didn’t go to a clinic?” I should keep my mouth shut, but it spilled out of me.
“My family tree would die out. I promised her not to let that happen.”
“But what if instead of going to a clinic and having an anonymous donor, you had a child with me?”
Devina still had her eyes closed and covered her mouth when she yawned again. “You want to donate your sperm to me?”
“Any time.”
“Hmm, we should use that in the book. Mark could get Deidra pregnant like back in the old days. That would fit well with the romance genre, but I’d have to write the book under a pen name or I would get angry letters.”
“Why?”
“Because of… you know…”
I lifted my head a little. “No, I don’t know.”
“The clinics guarantee the healthiest outcome since they make sure there aren’t any unwanted chromosomes that could result in syndromes and that sort of thing.”
“Ahh…” I lowered my head to her stomach again. “I still prefer the old-fashioned way of creating life. The thought of impregnating a woman is the biggest turn-on to any man. If you would let me be the father of your child, I would be the happiest man on earth.”
I waited for her response but her heavy breathing told me she had fallen asleep.
There was something magical about being in one of my favorite spots in the world with a gorgeous woman who trusted me enough to fall asleep in my presence.
She had been scared of me after her first visit, but the writing we had shared and the hours at the tournament had made her lower her guard around me.
Feeling afraid that my head was too heavy on her stomach, I turned and lay on my back next to her. She looked peaceful as her chest rose and fell with deep breaths. Her lips were slightly parted and being so close to her, I could see how long her dark lashes really were.
It was tempting to trail a finger along the bridge of her nose just like I used to do with Wilma when she was little, but I settled for holding Devina’s hand like she had asked me to.
Closing my eyes, I surrendered myself to the peaceful tranquility of the murmuring and bubbling sounds from the creek mixed with chirping birds in the distance, and that calming sound of the tree tops swaying ever so lightly from the wind.
“Thank you,” I muttered low because even though Devina was fast asleep and wouldn’t hear me, I felt a deep sense of gratitude in my heart that she was here with me.
CHAPTER 21
Dreams
Devina
The comforting sound of my brother’s soft snoring made me smile. I had missed being close to Justin and was quick to cuddle up against him. He made a small sound of protest when I arranged my head on his shoulder and swung my legs over his thigh.
“Mmm.” It felt so nice to be close to him again. We had done this often when he was little. Justin had been the biggest snuggle-bug of all of us, but lately he’d complained he got too hot when we cuddled, and I didn’t visit my family as often as I’d like to. With him being sixteen he was bigger than me. My hand rested on his chest and part of my brain registered that it was harder than I remembered. And since when did Justin have a dusting of hair on his chest?
Opening one eye, I saw that my dream of cuddling up with Justin had resulted in my wrapping myself around Tyton but when I stiffened, he turned his head and kissed the top of my hair.
“Ehh… I dreamed that you were my brother,” I explained and tried to pull away.
“Don’t stop.” His arm came around me. “I dreamt that you were my wife.”
“Is that why you kissed me?” I should be moving but despite the initial awkwardness it felt nice to be this close to him.
“Uh-huh.”
“And what did I look like in your dream?”
“You had large brown eyes and long thick lashes.” His voice was hoarse from sleep.
