“Fuuuck!” Magni groaned, his hands on his hips and his eyes to the sky where his large drone disappeared fast.
I used my hand to shield my eyes from the sun. “It was the right thing to do.”
Magni didn’t reply but lifted his wristband, calling for another drone to pick us up before he walked toward the gates of the border. “Let’s go,” he ordered over his shoulder. “I’m taking you home.”
CHAPTER 3
Physical Needs
Magni
This was my chance to set things straight with Laura. Now that she was back, I would discipline her and make sure she never ran away again.
“Make sure we aren’t disturbed,” I told my lieutenant, who was waiting for me when Laura and I got back to the Gray Mansion.
“But sir, Lord Khan just asked me to tell you to come to his office.” Excitement shone from the young soldier’s eyes as Franklin fell into step next to me. “The ruler returned twenty minutes ago and he’s waiting for you. Now that the border collapsed we’re all waiting for orders to attack.” Franklin was part of my elite unit, the Huntsmen, and always eager to serve.
“I already talked to Lord Khan at the border. He doesn’t want us to attack at this point.” I walked right past him with my hand locked around Laura’s wrist. “Tell my brother I’ll see him when I’m done with my wife.”
“Understood, sir.”
Laura and I didn’t talk as we ascended the curved staircase. Nor did we look at each other. The closer we came to our suite, the more my heart was racing. For six months, I had dreamed of this moment. My grip around Laura’s wrist tightened when I opened the door. She had to know that I would punish her for being disobedient.
“You’re hurting me,” she complained and jerked her hand back.
I gave her a light shove into our suite and closed the door behind us. “I don’t care if your hand hurts. You fucking humiliated me.”
Laura walked over to the window, keeping her back to me. “I know.” Her words were low-pitched.
“Do you have any idea how many fights I’ve been in because of you?”
Her head turned and she frowned. “What do you mean?”
“You turned me from one of the most respected men in the country to the loser whose wife ran away from him. I couldn’t go out without men ridiculing me and calling me insulting names.” I pulled up my sleeve. “See that long scar?”
“Someone stabbed you?”
“Uh-huh. I was piss drunk or the fucker wouldn’t have gotten close enough to cut me. But the point is that you made my life hell.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You’re sorry?” My body was tense from the resentment I held against her.
“It was an impulsive decision.”
“You left me!”
“I know. But it wasn’t to get away from you. It was to experience the freedom of the Motherlands.”
I locked the door and stalked toward her. “Are you talking about you learning martial arts?”
“Yes. That and walking around freely.”
With a hand, I spun Laura around to face me. “Did you sleep with anyone?”
“No.” Her tone was offended and her blue eyes didn’t blink. “Of course not.”
I narrowed my eyes. “Are you sure?”
