Reluctantly, I lowered her to the floor and put my shirt back on.

“Come on, medicine man,” she called flirtatiously from the door and I followed her like a damn puppy.

We cheered with the others at midnight and stayed for an extra thirty-five minutes until Chloe faked twisting her ankle.

“Dinnae worry, my lady. I’ll happily carry you around,” Andrew offered gallantly.

“You’re so sweet, but I’ll just ask Adam to take me home.”

I stepped closer, pretending to be less enthusiastic, but in my mind I was raising a victory fist in the air.

Take that, Highlander, she chose me to take her home.

“Dinnae say no, Cleo. Och, now Ah understand what they mean when they say that although the tongue has no bones, it’s strong enough to break a heart,” Andrew said in a drunken slur.

No matter how much Andrew and Derek were begging her to stay, Chloe still proceeded to say goodbye to everyone in the party, and I followed her lead.

“Good night, Darren,” I said when I got to him.

“You’re not leaving, are you?” Darren raised his hand to his face with a display of theatrical shock.

“Chloe twisted her ankle and I think she’s had too much to drink,” I explained.

“Such a tragedy,” he exclaimed. “And just now when my phone isn’t working.”

“What’s wrong with your phone?”

Darren picked it up from the table and handed it to me. “Your number isn’t in it.”

I shook my head and gave it back to him with a smile on my lips. “It was nice to meet you, Darren. You make quite an impression.”

“I know.” He grinned. “I’m not fit to be a wallflower type of person. People can like me or not, but they will remember me either way.”

“Are you ready?” Chloe snaked her arm underneath mine.

“Are you seriously stealing the second hottest guy from the party?” Darren asked her in a blaming tone.

“What do you mean, the second hottest? Who’s the hottest?” she asked and looked around.

“Hellooo…” he snapped his fingers in front of her face until she looked back at him. “Moi, of course.”

“Ohh… right.” Chloe smiled and looked down at his kilt and knee-high socks. “Nice touch with the Highlander outfit. That’s very… festive.”

He squared his shoulders. “Thank you, I think I look dashing too.”

Chloe’s smile was pearly-white. “It was nice to meet you, Darren. I hope I’ll see you again sometime.”

The moment we were alone in the backseat of the car my heartbeat became one long drum solo.

I took her hand and she looked over with what looked to be almost a shy smile.

Holding hands became intertwining our fingers, and I wished that the drive would magically be over so I could finally get her undressed. All my rational thoughts of why I shouldn’t be with Chloe were overruled by an overpowering need to go all the way.

The moment we closed the door to her apartment the game was on. I grabbed her from behind, turned her around, and pressed her against the wall.

“Are we doing this?” I asked.

She wet her lips and nodded. “You promised, remember.”
