My heart skipped a beat. I held the greatest respect for her abilities but the way she looked at me at the moment frightened me.
“What did you see?” I asked with apprehension.
“Are you sure you want to know?”
“It’s that bad, is it?”
“No. Not at all.”
“Then why do you look so serious?”
“Because the future I’ve seen for you looks different than the future you see for yourself.”
“What do you mean? What did you see?”
Violet sighed and fiddled with her hands. “You were happy in my visions. Deliriously so. I’ve never seen you so happy.”
“Well, that’s good.”
“You were doing important work to protect nature and your people. I got the sense you had money.”
My eyebrows lifted, waiting for the “but.”
Violet gave me an uncertain smile.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
“I saw things in my visions that will challenge you to break promises and rules. And whether you do that depends entirely on you.”
I shook my head in confusion. “I would never break my promises. My integrity is very important to me.”
“I know.”
We looked at each other for a long moment.
“Adam, I always knew I loved Jake, but it’s not like that for everyone.”
“Tell me about it. I’ve never felt that way about anyone. You’re lucky, Violet, you truly found your piece of the rainbow, didn’t you?”
“I did,” she said calmly and took my hand. “And you could too, if only you weren’t so fixated on one specific color in the rainbow.”
I tensed.
“There is no wrong color in a rainbow, Adam. It’s precisely because you bring different colors together that it works. The beauty is in the contrast. You know?”
I blinked, taking in her words.
“Is something wrong?” Jake approached us and Violet immediately let go of my hands.
“No, we’re fine,” she said and got up to kiss her husband. I wondered if he knew that I was a former lover and if that was why he had looked so serious.
Turning my head, I looked over to the table and caught Chloe’s eyes.
There, for half a second, was the insecure girl looking back at me, but then the façade was back up and Cleo was entertaining her audience again.
We had a delicious dessert and more wine. I spoke a lot to Melody, who shared her take on the food industry.
“Did Ah just hear ye right? Did ye say you were a vegan?” Derek asked as he passed us.
