“I should warn you,” Beckett said. “Reporters are outside again. I just saw a satellite truck pull up.”
Chloe sighed and brushed her hair back. “Thank you for the warning.”
After walking the police to the door, I returned to Chloe in the living room.
“I need to call my agent. Jane thinks I’m enjoying a tropical Christmas break with my parents and she’ll be pissed when she learns I’ve lied to her.”
“Okay, but afterward we’ll do the healing, okay?”
“Okay,” she agreed, with eyes darting around the room and hands fiddling with her phone.
I stated the obvious. “You don’t want to call her?”
“No.”
“Want me to do it?”
“No, I just need a minute.”
“What for?”
“I have to find her number first.”
“I thought you would have your agent’s number on speed dial.”
“Normally I do, but I told you: my real phone is in LA and this is just a reserve that Faith gave me so Niko couldn’t trace it.”
She disappeared into her bedroom and left the door open.
“I’m going down to get Max, and then I’m picking up some food for us, okay?” I called out.
“Okay.”
I walked Max while waiting for a pizza, and when I came back up I could hear Chloe on the phone and figured she had found her agent’s number.
Leaning against the doorframe, I took in her bedroom; it was as beautiful as the rest of the apartment. One wall was dark gray and provided a nice contrast to the creamy bedframe that stood against it. The rest of the walls were a light color close to white but not quite. A few dramatically colored art pieces gave the room character and with the reading nook, modern chandelier, and desk in the corner, it reminded me of a luxurious hotel suite – not that I’d been in many of those myself.
In the middle of the room, on the edge of the large king-size bed sat Chloe with the phone in her hand and deep frown lines on her face.
Max ran to sniff her and she petted him distractedly while I watched her with concern. It sounded like she had a hard time finishing her sentences without getting interrupted.
“Yes, I’m fine now. It was just shocking, you know.
“I know, but I…
“Yes, you’re right, but I needed to get away from LA.
“I’m sorry you feel that way, it…
“I said I’m sorry, I just needed a break…
“No, I didn’t read any scripts. There was no time.
“Where was I?” Chloe looked up at me and it pained me to see her look so small. I crossed my arms and moved closer.
“What did you say?” she asked into the phone.
“Oh, yes… ehm, I was in a forest in a small cabin.
