“I took my bag to the laundry room and washed my clothes. You must have heard the machine running.”

I blinked at him in stupefied horror.

“The laundry room?”

“Jesus, Chloe. You know, that room behind the kitchen,” he said sarcastically.

I hadn’t checked that room. I had cleaners who made sure the apartment was neat and my clothes were washed, but they only came once a week. Not for a second had I thought about that room.

“But where were you?”

“I told you; I took Max out.”

“But you had been gone for more than an hour when I left.”

“So? I took him to a dog park and let him play for an hour or more. I’d done that before.”

“Why didn’t you write me a note?”

He threw his hands in the air. “Because I didn’t for one second think you would be gone when I got back and refuse to answer my calls.”

“I texted you,” I said.

“And I answered you, remember?”

Biting my lip, I admitted. “No, because I blocked your number.”

He closed his eyes and shook his head. “You fucking blocked my number without talking to me first. Why?”

“Because I was so angry with you for just leaving me without even saying goodbye.”

“But I didn’t leave you.”

“I thought you did.”

“Then you’re an idiot. Don’t you remember what I had planned for us that night?”

I nodded and looked down.

“Then how in the hell did you come to the conclusion that I would leave you?”

“Because of our fight.”

“What fight? We didn’t fight. What the hell are you talking about.” Adam’s raised voice made Brian open the door.

“Is everything all right?” he asked.

I held up my hand signaling him not to interrupt us, and pulled Adam away from the door as Brian closed it again.

“Maybe fight isn’t the right word because we didn’t shout at each other, but I got really hurt when you didn’t want to…” I trailed off.

“When I didn’t want what?” he asked with confusion written on his face.

I was mortified to say it out loud and used a low voice. “Remember we didn’t have condoms and I said we could still do it?”

“Yeah?”

“But you pulled away like I wasn’t clean and you didn’t want to risk getting an STD or something.”
