“Because I can’t focus.”

“Why not? Are you too tired?” I opened my eyes and caught him looking down at my cleavage, which my blue silk chemise did nothing to hide.

“Yeah, I’m too tired,” he said and cleared his throat.

“Well, can I at least sleep next to you?”

“No!”

“Come on, be a gentleman.”

He rolled his eyes and fluffed his pillow. “I don’t think gentlemen sleep with women they don’t…” he stopped talking.

“Oh, sonowyou have a filter? What were you going to say?”

“Nothing.” He put down the pillow and got comfortable on his back.

“Were you going to say that gentlemen don’t sleep with women they don’tlike?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“It doesn’t matter, Chloe, let it go.”

“Just tell me already.”

With a sigh of surrender, he said: “I was just saying that gentlemen don’t sleep with women they don’t date.”

“Bullshit. That’s not what you wanted to say and we both know it. You were going to saylike– admit it.”

He didn’t admit to it, and so I lay there in the dimly lit room and scowled at him. “It’s okay, Adam, because I really don’t like you either.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“Yes.”

“Then why am I still here?”

“Because you’re supposed to help me, remember? But here I am, completely sleep deprived and scared as hell, and yet you won’t help me.”

Adam was watching me closely but didn’t speak.

“I’m going to sleep here with you,” I said. “Don’t say no, because I’m not giving you a choice. I’m tired and desperate and I hate sleeping alone.”

“Fine. Just be quiet and don’t feel me up again,” Adam grunted and turned his back on me.

“Why would I? I already know your size now, and it’s not that impressive.”

He stiffened but didn’t respond.

I still couldn’t sleep, and lying back to back with the thick tension between us didn’t help. From his breathing I could tell he wasn’t sleeping either.

“You’re not sleeping,” I whispered.

“I told you to be quiet.”

I turned around to face his back. “You want a drink?”
