“Chloe, go back to bed. You’re fine,” he muttered and turned on his side.
“I can’t sleep and I’m scared someone is going to attack me again.”
“Max is here,” Adam said in a long yawn. “He’ll protect you.”
“But he’s part of the problem. Every time I hear him growl, I’m scared someone is breaking in, and I’m used to having security guards around me at all times.”
Adam rubbed his face and yawned again. “What do you wantmeto do about it?”
“Tell me that you can fight and that you’ll protect me.”
“I can fight and I’ll protect you,” he said drowsily. “Now go back to bed and let me sleep.”
“No. I can’t sleep when I’m scared.”
He made a low sound of frustration.
“Come on, Adam, we both know you can get me to sleep in two minutes if you do that healing thing to me.”
“I asked you earlier if you wanted me to heal you and you said no, remember?”
“That was before I tossed and turned in my bed for two hours.”
“But I’m too tired now.”
Resolutely I turned off the ceiling light and crawled up on his bed.
“No, Chloe, don’t do that. You’ll just fall asleep and I don’t want you here.”
“Too bad.”
Adam sat up and pulled his long hair back. “I swear something is not right with you, woman. How many times do I have to tell you I don’t want to sleep with you?”
“Don’t flatter yourself. I’m not here for sex. Just work your sleep magic and be quiet, medicine man.”
Adam gave me a hard glance. “Don’t push me.”
“If you want the donation it’s only fair that you work for the money.” I got under his covers and felt the heat from his body although I wasn’t physically touching him. “Here,” I said and reached out my hand.
He groaned. “Doesn’t it bother you to fall asleep in my bed after I told you I touched you in your sleep back in the cabin?” Adam asked in a hoarse sleepy voice.
“You won’t touch me and we both know it. If you wanted to do it, you would have done it the first time you had the chance.”
“You’re forgetting one thing,” he said.
“And what is that?”
“Nigel was in the cabin that night. Maybe that’s why I stopped. But now we’re alone.”
I looked into his eyes and went with my instinct. “You’re saying that to get rid of me, but it won’t work. You might be big, grumpy, and a huge jerk at times, but deep down you’re a good guy and we both know it.
With an irritated sigh he took my hand.
“Close your eyes.”
I lay back on my back and closed my eyes while he propped himself up on an elbow and talked to me about relaxing and breathing deeply.
“Why isn’t it working?” I asked.
