“You dress in high heels and a dress on a normal Thursday?”
“Yes, if I feel like it. Some days I dress in tight jeans and a shirt, but today I felt like wearing a dress. Do you like it?”
“Ehm… sure. It’s pretty.”
“What, the dress or me?” I knew it was mean of me to pressure him, but my wounded pride from yesterday couldn’t help fishing for compliments.
“Both, I guess,” he said noncommittally, which gave me no satisfaction at all.
“Did you speak to Onava?” I asked.
“Yes, I called her this morning and told her about the situation.”
“You did?” My voice rose in surprise.
“Well, I told her you had to go back to the city and that we have Max here.”
“But did you tell her I left for Seattle after we almost had sex and you offended me?”
Adam tightened his jaw. “No, I left out that part.”
“Yeah, I figured.” I rolled my eyes.
“We can still make this work, Chloe,” Adam said firmly.
“How?”
“It’s not ideal to be in the city, but with daily meditation, healing, and talks I’m sure we could make you feel stronger and better.
I was relieved that he wanted to stay with me, but did my best to hide it.
“So what do you suggest?”
“I suggest that we keep on working on your strength and your energy, although I have to say being here isn’t good for you. With everything that happened yesterday your energy is weak.”
“And that is why today we’re going house hunting,” I informed him.
“But you already have a house in LA. Why do you need one in Seattle?”
“Because I love Seattle and my sister lives here.” I poured a cup of coffee and took a croissant from the paper bag on the counter.
“Okay, sure, whatever you want. As long as there’s also time for reflection, healing, and meditation so we can get you balanced. “
“Right. I’m going to call Tina and have her make the arrangements.”
“Who is Tina?”
“She’s my personal assistant. She takes care of all the practicalities, you know.”
“Of course she does,” Adam mumbled under his breath but I ignored that.
Tina was happy to hear from me. I asked her to get my security team to contact me and find the real-estate broker I had used when I bought this apartment. The best part of our call was Tina’s telling me that my pilot had left for Scotland to pick up my sister and Logan.
“I’m going to surprise Faith and be there to welcome her when she flies in,” I told Adam with a smile. “I’ve missed her.”
“What happened to your detox from devices?” Adam asked and nodded to the phone. “If you’re supposed to stress down do you think that was a good call?”
I thought about it. “You know, right now I have a lot of things that stress me out. In some months there will be a trial against Niko where I have to be a witness. Then there’re his crazy fans that want to hurt me and the fact that they know where I live. Really, there’s a long list of other things I worry about too, but for now I choose to focus on getting a new, safer place to stay and my security guards back on duty. Hopefully I can relax when that happens.”
