CHAPTER 9
Seattle
Adam
I knew something was wrong when I got back to the cabin. My long walk had helped me digest my frustration, and I was going to apologize to Chloe for what happened between us earlier. It wasn’t her fault that I had let it get too far.
But the sight that met me had me slow my pace and stop a few feet from my truck, where Chloe sat in the driver’s seat, with the engine running and the window rolled down.
“What are you doing?” I asked in a voice as calm as I could muster.
“I’m leaving.”
“Why?”
She gave me a defiant glare. “I just am. I was gonna leave before you got back, but I’m not that cruel. You wanna come or are you staying here?”
“You’re offering me a ride in my own truck?”
“Uh-huh.”
“I don’t remember giving you permission to take…”
The engine revved up and she started rolling the car slowly away from me. “You have two minutes to gather your stuff if you want a ride,” she called out to me over the loud noise from the engine.
From her determined expression I didn’t doubt she meant it.
“What about Max?” I shouted with a quick glance at the dog next to me.
“You’ll have to bring him, I guess,” she answered and revved the engine again.
Two minutes later, I had packed my duffel bag, locked the cabin, and whistled for Max to come with me.
“I’m driving,” I said and went to the driver’s side, but the window was closed and the door locked. Chloe pointed to the passenger seat and when I shook my head to signal that wasn’t happening, she shrugged, waved, and began slowly rolling away.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” I shouted as she drove off.
As if she had heard me the red taillights came on and the truck stopped. I swallowed my pride and jogged up to the passenger door.
As soon as the dog and I were inside the truck, Chloe took off.
“Just for the record, no one drives my truck but me,” I told her with a scowl.
She gave me a sideways glance. “Well, just for the record, I don’t give a shit.”
“I mean it, Chloe, pull over and let me drive.”
She ignored me, and I figured it would be too dangerous to try and force her.
Crossing my arms and tightening my jaw, I kept my eyes on the road. “So what’s your plan?”
“My plan is to go back to my apartment in Seattle and then you can take your truck and go home, wherever that is.”
“So that’s it? We’re done with the work and you’ll donate the ten million dollars?”
She snorted. “I don’t think so. I didn’t get what I was promised, so neither will you.”
“And what exactly were you promised?”
