“Right,” Nigel laughed. “So, I was thinking that maybe if I help you cut down that tree, you could give me a ride to my car?”

“Works for me.” Adam avoided looking in my direction.

My mind was still reeling from our fight and the things he had told me. Had Adam really touched me in my sleep or was he messing with my head?

When he and Nigel went out to clear the tree from the dirt road I offered to come, but Adam suggested I clean up the cabin instead.

That took about five minutes.

An hour later, I was restless and a bit ashamed of my drama this morning, so I went to help the guys and arrived just when they were clearing away the last logs from the road.

“Can I help?” I offered.

Adam ignored me but Nigel gave me a wide smile and pointed to a bunch of branches. “You could move those out of the way.”

While I struggled with the heavy work Niles and Adam were huffing and puffing to roll a large log to the side.

As soon as they were done, Adam brushed his hands off and called out to Nigel. “Let me just get my wallet and then I’ll take you to your car.” Adam signaled for him to get in on the passenger side of the truck.

“I’ll just wait here for you,” Nigel said with a smile.

“Suit yourself,” Adam grumped and looked at me. “Jump in and I’ll take you back to the cabin.”

God, I was tired of him ordering me around. “It’s a hundred feet, I can walk,” I said.

Adam’s eyes darted between Nigel and me, and I got the feeling he didn’t feel comfortable leaving us alone.

Never had I seen anyone back a truck a hundred feet that fast. Mud was splashing up around him.

“Thank you for letting me stay the night, Faith,” Nigel said and pulled out his cell phone. “Can I get a picture to remember you by?”

I smiled politely, but shook my head. “I’d rather not.”

“But it’s just for me,” he pressured.

“No thanks. I don’t have any make-up on,” I tried to insist, but he wouldn’t take no for an answer.

“That’s a lame excuse, you look beautiful. Come on, just a quick pic for memory’s sake.”

My insides were screaming “no,” but the performer in me was trained to please and so I smiled when Nigel took a selfie of him hugging me.

We all have moments in our lives we wish we could undo. This became one of mine.
