“At your house?” I said twenty seconds later, my finger still following the lines as I read the article.
“Yes. I don’t understand why Faith hasn’t said anything. According to the article it happened Wednesday night. That’s four days ago.” She frowned at me. “You came Thursday; are you sure you didn’t hear anything on the news?”
“Sorry, I don’t watch a lot of news and Wednesday I was with a friend.”
“Ohh… right.” She pulled back in her seat. “I should have known.”
I was still reading and didn’t answer.
“Is she Native American then?”
“Huh?” I said distractedly. “What did you say?”
“Your girlfriend; is she Native?”
I lifted my eyes and saw her watching me closely.
“I just find it offensive that you would lie to my face.”
“When did I lie?” I asked.
She crossed her arms and leaned back. “You said you wouldn’t ask me out in this lifetime because I’m white. That’snotthe reason and you know it.”
I narrowed my gaze and matched her crossed arms.
“I’ve seen you on a date with a white woman,” she elaborated. “Remember Christian’s sister?”
“Ahh, so you do remember me,” I said slowly.
“Yeah, and funny enough, you had no problem kissing her passionately.”
A waiter approached. “Merry Christmas,” he said and smiled brightly. “Here’s a menu for you, can I start you off with a drink?”
“Just a beer.”
“Certainly. Will a lager do?”
“Sure, that’s fine,” I said eager to get rid of him.
The waiter looked down at Chloe’s white wine. “And you, miss, would you like another glass?”
“Yes.”
As soon as he was gone, I leaned in. “Look, that night at the bar I was with Violet because she needed a date for her brother’s birthday. Sheasked me out.”
She snorted and emptied her glass with a greedy gulp.
“It’s true, Chloe, and to be honest it’s really none of your business who I kiss or don’t kiss.”
“Hey, asshat.” She moved closer, her finger pointing at my face. “I don’t give a rat’s ass who you kiss. You’re not my type either. But you don’t get to tell me that I’m weak if you can’t even be honest with me. Lying is fucking pathetic.”
“I didn’t lie,” I insisted.
“Yes, you did and you know it!” she hissed. “Not only did you lie, but you’re a freaking racist too.”
“Why? Because I prefer Native women?”
She was seething with indignation.
