“Actually, there’s something you need to see in there.”
“What?”
“The painting of you and Chloe that Cia painted.”
“It’s in there?” Adam’s eyes widened. “I wondered how it turned out.”
“It’s beautiful. Chloe let Darren exhibit it.”
“She did? Wow, that surprises me.”
“Why?”
“I just never thought she would let anyone see it.”
I pointed ahead. “This is a no-parking zone, but there’s a parking lot over there.”
“Looks kind of dark to me,” Adam said critically.
“Are you afraid someone will steal your truck?” I teased.
He ignored my sarcastic comment, and eased over and parked the car in the almost empty lot across the street from the gallery.
“Why didn’t you think Chloe would let anyone see the painting?” I asked.
He scoffed. “For the same reason she invented that whole drama of me leaving so she could get out of having a relationship with me. I think it’s simple: Chloe was embarrassed about me.”
“No… that’s not true,” I objected, struggling to get the seat belt off.
“Come on, Faith, you might be twins but you two are different people,” Adam said and clicked me free. “I respect that you’re not controlled by superficial things, but we both know there’s no way Chloe would date a guy like Logan. He’s not presentable enough for her glamourous lifestyle.”
I wanted to tell him it wasn’t true, but back when Faith started dating Logan I hadn’t understood how she could look past his many scars. I cringed internally at the realization of exactly how flawed and shallow a person I used to be.
“I’m no different,” Adam said. “I’ve got no money, no fame, or followers. And I’m Native, which doesn’t make it better.”
“Chloe respects and admires your culture; why else do you think she contributes to the foundation? And she certainly didn’t invent a reason to avoid you. She wanted to be with you because of who you are and how you made her feel.”
Adam killed the engine and looked over at me. “Nah… I mean, maybe she was infatuated for a while, but don’t call it love. I don’t think Chloe even knows what it means.”
I felt like punching him. “She told me she loved the way you made her feel and that you were an amazing kisser.”
Adam’s eyes were dancing. “She told you that?”
“Yes.”
“I could say the same thing about her.” He smiled as his fingers played distractedly with a hole in the leather on the steering wheel. “Being with her was different from anything I’ve ever experienced.”
“In what way?”
He thought about it. “It’s hard to explain but you know I work with people’s energy, right?”
“Yeah.”
“So, every person has a different energy and even that can change from day to day.”
“Uh-huh.”
“With Chloe, there’s this pull, and it’s stronger than I’ve ever experienced before. In the beginning I thought it was because she didn’t have any personal boundaries but the more time I spent with her I realized it wasn’t just that.”
