CHAPTER 21

The Foundation

Adam

I was standing outside my house when Onava rolled in. Her old Ford was making a funny noise that had me frowning.

“Doesn’t sound too good – want me to look at it?” I asked when she got out.

Ona waved her hand. “Oh, don’t you mind my old car. We oldies have our shrieking noises.”

I smiled and hugged her but still decided that I would go over her car before I let her take off in that old thing.

“It’s good to see you, and Max of course.”

“I couldn’t leave him at home for that long.”

“How long are you planning on staying?” I asked with my brows raised, since she hadn’t given me any specifics yesterday when she called to say she needed to talk to me.

Onava got her bag from the backseat and broke into a wry smile. “That depends on how long my stay takes.”

It was such a typical answer from her that I just smiled and led her inside my house. “I’m curious to hear what this is all about.”

“Of course you are.”

“You sounded excited on the phone.”

Onava stepped inside my small living room and set down her bag. “Iamexcited,” she said.

“Then why don’t you take a seat and tell me what this is all about?”

Onava walked over to sit down on my old leather couch.

“Do you want coffee?” I offered.

“Actually I could use a cold beer; do you have any?” she asked.

I got out two beers and sat down as well. “Cheers.”

“Cheers.” She raised her bottle and took a sip before she spoke. “Have you heard from Chloe?”

“Kinda.” I swallowed a big sip of beer.

“What does that mean?”

“She called a few days ago, but she only said a few words and hung up again.”

“Hmm, that’s odd. Maybe the call just dropped,” Onava suggested, and even though I knew it wasn’t the case I shrugged to signal that was a possibility.

Onava twisted her beer in her hands and a grin of excitement slowly grew and transformed her face. “We got a letter from her lawyers,” she said.

“Her lawyers?”

“Yes, she won’t be giving the ten percent we agreed upon to the wild life foundation.”

“Then why do you look so pleased? What aren’t you telling me?”

“She’s giving five percent, which is still five point eight million dollars.”
