I slammed her front door shut behind me, got into my car, and texted Nate and Sayer, telling them it was an emergency. Because it was.

No way was I going to lose Echo.

No fucking way.

Chapter 21

Echo~

Talk about a shitshow.

After Gideon had walked out and took my heart with him, Louise had called me, and even though I hadn’t been in the frame of mind to talk to anyone, I had answered because I still felt bad that she and Gideon were at odds.

So, after an hour of apologies and reassurances, Louise felt better, but I didn’t. She had been tactful enough not to bring up me and her son directly, but you could tell she was obviously hoping for the best. Louise had mostly taken responsibility for her meddling and lying to me.

And if it wasn’t enough that I’d been lied to, ambushed, argued with, and upset, all the crap I’d plan on doing today still needed to be done. However, I didn’t want to end up a viral sensation by having a nervous breakdown in the school supply aisle at the store, so I had decided to stay my ass home.

Want to know how that idea panned out?

Well, right now, hours after my fight with Gideon, I was standing just inside my front door, staring at my ex-husband, who was standing on my doorstep.

Fuck.

My.

Life.

“You have got to be kidding me?”

Marco had the decency to flush. “I know, Echo,” he quickly said. “I’m sorry to just show up like this-”

“Then, why did you?”

“Because you wouldn’t answer my calls.”

“And that wasn’t a hint enough for you?”

His lipped pinched, and he looked annoyed. “Look, I know you don’t owe me anything, but I was hoping we could talk.”

“Wa…wait,” I stammered. “How in the hell do you even know where I live?”

“C’mon, Echo. It’s not that hard to find someone,” he replied condescendingly. “Especially, when you’re in politics with connections in the clerks’ offices.”

Christ, I couldn’t believe I was once married to this pompous jackass. I stared at the man I once believed I wanted to spend the rest of my life with and couldn’t believe the magnitude of my stupidity. I really hit it out of the park with this one.

Jesus, what had I been thinking?

“Marco, whatever this is, I want no part of it,” I told him. “You need to leave.”

He must have picked up on how serious I was because he quickly ditched the condescending tone. “Just hear me out, Echo,” he practically begged.“Please.”

“Mar-”

“Just…just let me come inside, and we can talk like adults. Privately and civilly,” he suggested, and I couldn’t stop how I damn near laughed in his face.

“Are you insane?” I choked out. “There’s no way I’m letting you inside my house.”

“Then how else are we supposed to talk, Echo?”
