Not just their emotions, but their aura, their soul.
And she wasn’t wrong. Brenya looked into her cup of hot chocolate, “I met a man, literally the other day, and the second our eyes met, I knew he was it for me. Like I have never had a connection with someone like that before. It was instant. And when we kissed for the first time and it cemented it more.”
She looked up and her mom and grandma were looking at each other as if they were talking to each other telepathically and she raised her eyebrows, “What is going on?”
Her mom blinked, “Nothing. Keep going please?”
She sighed, “Fine. Anyway, he was there when Alan came onto me and protected me from him, and has treated me like a Queen. And we made love last night and it was like this bond is getting stronger between us, but still not at its full potential.”
She put her hand on her forehead, “But then, this morning, he told me he is an elf, and he lives in the North Pole and works for Santa Claus. Like what is that? I don’t understand it. He has always seemed sane, but he wasn't. He even showed me that his ears are pointed and he magically made clothes appear. But, I have seen magicians before. And know people get weird enhancements on their body. So it’s weird. I don’t know what to do. I know he is telling the truth, and that is the hardest thing for me to accept. I needed to think.”
She looked up, dropping her hand to her lap. Her mom’s eyes were wide, and so were her grandma’s.
Brynn leaned forward, “Will you come with us for a second?”
Brenya nodded, “Uh, sure. I thought we were figuring out my problem.”
Brynn looked at Astryd, “Trust us sweetheart,” her grandma said, “this will help you.”
Brenya stood and her mom led her to the living room and shut the blinds.
“Okay sweetie, what we are about to tell you is very important, it’s also not a lie. Okay?”
Brenya nodded, “I don’t understand.”
Astryd nodded, “You will.”
Brynn looked at Astryd, and Astryd took her long hair out of it’s usual style that never changed, no matter how many years had passed.
Brenya never questioned why her grandma didn’t do anything different with her hair, but as soon as Astryd pulled the ponytail from her hair, and it fell free, her eyes went wide with shock.
Not only was her grandma’s hair almost down to the floor, but was all different shades of brown.
Like it was a brown rainbow, ranging from dark brown almost black to light brown almost blonde.
She didn’t understand, and then her grandma tucked her hair behind her ear.
Her grandma’s ear was pointed at the tip. Just like Jensynn’s had been.
Brenya reached forward and gently touched the tip of her grandma’s ear.
Then her mom pulled her hair free as well and Brenya seemed to recall that her mom also always had her ears covered.
Her mom’s hair was almost as long as her grandma’s and had a few of the same shades of brown mixed in, but not as much as her grandma.
And she too tucked a piece of hair behind her ear, revealing the fact that her ear was pointed at the tip, not as much as her grandma’s, but enough people would talk.
Brenya felt her own ear, and when she was younger had always wondered why her ears were so strange, but had left it be and now that she was older, the slight point at the tip was a little more pronounced and she sat back against the couch, in awe.
With a wink, her grandma’s hair twisted itself back into her regular style of a french twist at the back of her head.
Her grandma walked over to where she sat, “So, you will have questions, but let your mom and I tell you about me first. Okay?”
Brenya just nodded and her grandma smiled, “I am a Fae. My kind don’t have wings like other Fae though. We are a branch off of real fae, closely related to them, or an elf if you want to get really specific. I have magic powers, as does your mother, and as do you. Our line is known for our powers of knowing the truth and lies, being able to sense good and bad in all, and to read people and their auras. Among many other things. And our line was lucky. We were blessed with finding our true mate with one look.”
Grandma smiled, “Your grandfather is my true mate, even though he is human.”
Brenya sat stock still, and her grandma went on, “I am not from the Pole, where most elves live, or from anywhere on this earth really, but from a place much like this. It is a magical realm and is full of many magical creatures. People have often stumbled on this world by accident, and that is where the stories of magic and all sorts of magical creatures come from.”
