Kian growled, “What is going on?”
“Reid is in danger. His old chief of police, Mark Cazair is not the man who everyone thinks he is and Reid and your friend Xavier found this out with some digging. And because of that, Mark kidnapped Xavier and must have gotten to Reid as well. I was trying to warn him but wasn’t fast enough.”
Kian went still and Mila put a hand to her mouth, “What do you mean he isn’t who everyone thinks he is?”
The voice said, “What that means is that he is the drug king in Chicago. He has several operations and is the man who profits off the largest prostitution ring there as well. He was pushed over the edge when Xavier found the evidence that kept me in prison was all falsified. Reid and Xavier were looking into his past and found so many inconsistencies and things that showed he has covered his tracks for a while. He was trying to pin everything on me and wanted me and my operation to kill Reid when he started working for me.”
Kian sucked in a breath, “Nikolai. Oh lord. I knew you sounded familiar.”
Nikolai gave a sound of acknowledgement, “He told you about me then?”
Kian nodded, “He did. It was his biggest regret and he hated that you ended up in jail for nothing you did.”
Nikolai let out a soft sigh, “I know he did. I forgave him long ago, because I knew he wasn’t the man to do that. And now, he is in the hands of that mad man. And I didn’t warn him in time.”
Kian pinched the bridge of his nose, “They couldn’t have gotten too far. I will start having the other officers looking for him on the roads and putting an APB out for Mark.”
“I will be there in two hours. We are just getting on board right now. We will find him Kian. I just know it. He can’t leave it like this. Leave his girl like this.”
Mila choked out a sob and the man on the phone said, “Is that her?”
“Yes. She is the one who alerted me to the fact that he didn’t come home.”
Nikolai cursed, “So he has had him for hours. Fuck. Be strong Mila. We will be there to help find him.”
Mila whispered, “I will try. Thank you.”
Kian hung up the phone and pulled her into his arms. “Reid is the strongest man I know. You have to have faith that he and Xavier are still alive and that we will find them. Okay?”
She clutched at Kian; her legs no longer able to hold her weight. “Okay.”
Kian helped her to his car and turned on his radio, “Brek, we have a situation. I need you, Trace and Scott to start canvasing the town for Reid. He was taken by a mad man who wants his blood. I don’t know if it is too late to find him, or if he is gone but we have to try.”
Brek’s voice came across the radio, “Are you serious Kian?”
Kian put his hand to his forehead with the radio still in his palm, “Unfortunately yes.”
“Fuck. Okay, I will get Trace on it, and Scott and I will do our best as well. Come to the station. I need all the details you have.”
Mila held Reid’s phone in her hands, the last thing she had of him and read the message he had written to her again.
She felt the tears fall down her cheeks and had to stifle the sobs that tried to burst free.
Kian reached over and squeezed her hand, “We will find him. I will accept nothing less.”
She just nodded and he dropped her off at her parents where she collapsed in the front room as soon as Kian left.
She just melted to the floor, sobbing as she did so.
Her mom heard her and came to investigate. She let out a cry when she saw her on the floor and dropped to her knees.
“Mila? What is wrong?” Mila shook her head and Malena curled her in her arms, letting her just cry.
When she could take a breath, she told her mom everything and Malena looked completely shocked.
“They are looking for him?”
Mila nodded and Malena wiped her tears, “We will do whatever we can to find him as well. I swear it. Come on love, let’s go get you a drink.”
Mila stood with help from her mom and went to the kitchen, spent and heartbroken, praying that he was safe and alive.
She couldn’t face any other option.
