Reid and Xavier made their way down to the men slowly and when they got to where they were, the men were all smiling.
“Reid? And Xavier?”
Reid nodded and Xavier said, “That’s us. How did you guys know who we are or find us for that matter?”
One of the men grinned at them, “We have been searching for two days now. Your girl and the officers in town have mobilized everyone to look for you.”
Reid went still, “My girl?”
The man grinned again, “Oh yeah, that girl is something else. You are a lucky man indeed. The people in town have loved Mila for her entire life. She is a wonderful girl.”
Reid smiled, “She is.”
One of the other men said, “We radioed our location to them and will start to go back down the mountain. Can you make it? Or should we attempt an air rescue?”
Reid shook his head, “We are in pain, but we can make it right?”
Xavier nodded, “Let’s go.”
They each got handed a water bottle and one of the men re-did Xavier’s bandage with clean gauze.
Then they cleaned out the cut on his arm and fixed his sling with more clean gauze.
Then they walked down the mountain with the men that found them.
Within two hours, they were closer to where Reid could see police, and other people milling about through the thick vegetation and the trees.
When they emerged from the trees, the first person he saw was Mila.
She was pacing back and forth, biting a fingernail and then putting it down. And then bringing it up to do it again.
When she noticed them, she went stock still and he saw her eyes go wide.
She let out a squeal and ran at him, and Reid stepped forward, catching her in his good arm as she wrapped herself around him.
He let out a tiny groan of pain but didn’t care. He had her back in his arms again.
She was sobbing against his neck, her tears wet and making his own fall free.
And then she lifted her head up, framing his face with her hands and kissing him, their tears mingling together.
“Oh Reid. Reid! Oh, thank god. I love you. I thought I lost you.” She sobbed and he said, “I love you too. I will always come back for you.”
She kissed him again and then they were surrounded by the people and his friends and family.
Mila started laughing as they all surrounded them and she let him go as he was pulled into careful hugs by his brother, Trace, Brek and Brent. His dad was there as well and then he was shocked to see Nikolai’s face there and hugging him.
Reid didn’t even know what to think and when Mila led him to the nearest ambulance and made him get on the gurney he still hadn’t found his voice.
“Nikolai. What are you doing here?” He said after the words finally broke free.
Nikolai grinned at him, “Came to find you. You need to go to the hospital Reid. We can talk later.”
Reid reluctantly let them put him in the ambulance and when he saw Xavier loaded into the other, he was relieved.
Xavier gave him a nod and then the doors were shut on his ambulance and Reid lay back, shocked they had survived.
Mila held his hand as they drove to the hospital and refused to leave his side as they examined him when they arrived at the hospital.
