Reid nodded, “I get it, and thank you for protecting my brother. Just keep yourself safe.”

Xavier nodded, “Will do. Let me know what Dmitri says.”

Reid nodded again and Xavier hung up and Reid pulled out his burner phone and called the number he never thought he would ever again.

A growling Russian accent answered, “What is it you want?”

“Dmitri, I need your help.”

“Nyet. I don’t give help to traitors.”

Reid sighed, “I didn’t betray you or Nikolai. I swear it on my life Dmitri. My superior was the one who betrayed us all and I have the evidence to prove it.”

Dmitri was silent for a few seconds and Reid just knew he was going to hang up, but he didn’t. “Go on. You have my attention.”

Reid let out the breath he didn’t know he was holding and told Dmitri everything that Xavier had told him and sent him everything as well.

Dmitri was breathing hard, “I need to send these to Nikolai’s lawyers. Goddamn it Reid. You aren’t the traitor?”

Reid shook his head sadly, “Nikolai is my friend. In the beginning I was supposed to look for the evil that was hiding in his house. To find the man that Mark told me he was. But Nikolai and you weren’t that way. And it messed with my head. I thought that I could have gotten bad intel and I did. But I didn’t know it was straight from the man who wanted Nikolai dead. Or gone. And I regret what happened. I tried so hard to talk to Nikolai, but Mark wouldn’t let me.”

Dmitri sighed, “Damn it. Fucking hell. Nikolai was released on good behavior and on bail just the other day.”

Reid went still, “He did?”

“Yes. He is home, do you wish to speak to him?”

Reid let out a breath, “I don’t know if he will speak to me. Just show him everything I sent over. And give it to your lawyer. Nikolai shouldn’t have been in prison at all.”

Dmitri said, “Nyet, he will wish to talk to you.”

Reid let out a silent curse, “So be it.”

Dmitri’s clothes made noise and so did his shoes as he walked. “Dmitri, are you certain I should speak to him? He thinks I betrayed him.”

Dmitri stopped moving, “Reid, he never blamed you. I did, but not him.”

“Okay, well then, let’s get this over with.”

A knock sounded on a door somewhere and Reid steeled himself to hear his friend's voice again.

Dmitri was murmuring something and then the phone was answered by his best friend.

“Reid. Long time old friend.”

Reid sat down hard again, “It sure has been.”

“Dmitri tells me you have information for me.”

“I do.” He told Nikolai everything he had told Dmitri and sent all the files that Xavier had sent him to Dmitri’s phone.

He heard Nikolai suck in a breath, “You found all this out?”

Reid let out a breath, “Well, bits and pieces started making more sense a few months ago and I wrote it all down to have Xavier look into for me. But yes, after going over and over the events of that night, I knew you were innocent.”

Nikolai sucked in a breath, “And why didn’t you look into it yourself?”

Reid sighed, “I have been in the hospital.”
