The doctor looked up at Trace and nodded. “He can come for a bit. He just can’t stay long.”

She grabbed Trace’s hand, “Go check on him. Please.”

Trace looked like he wanted to argue but she shook her head, “Please Trace. I need to see how he is and since I can’t, you need to.”

He nodded and kissed her, then followed the doctor from the room.

She lay back on her bed and cried. She couldn’t believe all of the things that had happened in the last few days and her mind was too overwhelmed.

Her door opened again and when she looked over, her mom walked in with Grandma Viv on her heels.

“Mom!” She cried out and Ailith hurried to her side and sat gingerly on her bed, before pulling her into a soft hug.

She cupped Emery’s cheeks, and kissed them softly, “How are you darlin’ girl?”

Emery sobbed into her mother's hands and Ailith pulled her in for a hug and kept her in her embrace until she stopped crying.

When her sobs quieted Ailith pulled her back again and wiped the tears away.

“Now, now. It isn’t all that bad is it? I met your handsome man out there. You certainly picked a good one, didn’t you?”

Emery gave a watery smile, “I did. He asked me to marry him. And I said yes. He almost died for me. Trying to save me. And I love him. More than I can say.”

Ailith smiled, “My darlin. Of course, you do. He is a good man. Your father and brothers like him, and your father even gave him his blessing. Which would never happen if your da didn’t think he was a good man.”

Emery nodded, “I am glad daddy gave his blessing. I can’t wait to be his wife. After the last few days, I know life is short and can be taken from you at any moment.”

Ailith kissed her cheek again, “Talk to mom sweet darling. Tell me all about what has happened since we last spoke.”

Emery did just that. Grandma Viv had taken the chair that Trace had vacated and they both listened as Emery told them about her fears and how much she loved Trace.

How grateful she was to her brothers and everything else.

She left out the parts where Trace had claimed her, but she told them everything else.

And by the end, her eyes were drooping, and she was slurring her words.

Her mom pulled the blanket up higher and kissed her forehead. “Grandma and I will be here. Go to sleep darling.”

Emery nodded and was asleep in seconds.
