Brek jumped in the front seat and Kian and Reid got in the back.
Trace drove as fast as he could to Grandma Viv’s house.
When they got there, Brek let Kian and Reid out of the back and Trace burst in the front door, scaring Grandma Viv.
“Trace! You scared the daylights out of me.”
“I apologize, I just have to check Emery’s room for something,” he yelled as he ran to her room.
Kian was right on his heels and when Trace opened the door to her room and walked inside, seeing the note on her bed. He picked it up and it read,
I stayed the night with Trace. See you later.
And Trace felt his stomach drop again, “This isn’t her handwriting. I haven’t seen it much, but her writing is way more delicate. She didn’t write this.”
Reid was looking around her room and stopped at the window. It was slightly ajar and on the latch was a piece of tape.
Like someone had wanted to keep the window from shutting all the way. There also was a small cap from a needle cartridge on the ground next to the window.
Reid leaned out of the window, “There are footprints out here. Just one set to and from the window.”
Trace ran from the room and out back where sure enough, one set of tracks led to and from her window. But on the set away from her window they seemed as if they were slightly deeper.
He followed the tracks to a set of tire prints and then they disappeared on the road.
He cursed up a storm. “She's gone! Gone. Someone took her! How in the hell did that happen that fast? How will we find her?”
He ran his hands over his hair and tried hard to not start freaking out. He needed to keep his head level and now was not the time to act irrationally.
Brek came up beside him, “We will find her. I promise.”
He nodded and tried his best to keep his head calm.
He walked back into the house and saw Kian hugging Grandma Viv. She was crying and he knelt in front of her.
“You boys find her. Or I will box your ears. You bring her back to me.”
He nodded, and touched her hand softly, “Trust me. That is all I want. She needs to be back here.”
He looked at Kian, “I'm going back to the station, we have more resources there. And then we need to start searching. On foot, or in our cars, I don’t care.”
Kian nodded and kissed his grandmas’ cheek. “We will find her gran.”
She pointed at them, “You better tell your mom and dad that she is missing. And by damn it, I am moving from this town the first chance I get.”
Reid knelt in front of her, “Don’t do that Gran. We love this town and I doubt that Trace will let Emery leave once he has found her. Don’t do something rash. This was just a coincidence.”
She nodded and Trace walked out, not listening to her reply. He got back into the car with Brek and ran his hands over his hair, “Emery told me that she had a stalker and he sent her a text the other day. I just didn’t realize he would actually be here and take her from me.”
Kian and Reid opened the door and Trace took off toward the station, “His name is Lance Greenwood. He has been bugging her for a while. But how did he know where she was? We haven’t been able to find him no matter what we've tried. He seems to drop off the map when we get close to any of his known locations. But I thought he didn’t know she left home. Didn’t think he knew where she was.”
Trace shook his head, “I don’t know the answers to those questions, but I will find out.”
He pulled back into the station and the four of them walked in, grim looks on their faces.
Stacy was smiling at first, but the smile quickly vanished, and her face went fierce. “What’s wrong?”
“Emery is gone. Someone took her from her grandma’s house sometime in the night.”
