One of the men said, “Are you his family?”

She shook her head, and he gave her a sympathetic look. They shut the doors, already working on Brek, to stabilize him, taking off into the night.

Another ambulance sped up the driveway and they brought Trace out on the next stretcher moments later.

She watched him get loaded up as well and they asked if she was family, she nodded.

“I would normally let you ride with us, but we need to work fast. We have to get him into surgery. Can you make it to the hospital?”

She nodded and she watched them drive away with her brother in the back.

A touch to her arm made her jump and she looked at a young woman standing there.

“I’m Stacy. I work at the station with Brek and Trace. I’m not a cop, I’m their dispatcher and apparently the only help they have left. Can you tell me what happened?”

She nodded, and Stacy led her up to her house, and when Stacy saw Jake’s body, she gasped.

“Oh my gosh. Okay. The entire police force is gone. I was not expecting to find Jake dead. Just that he was here. And that you needed help. I need to call in the old chief for help. Can you wait for a minute?”

Sienna nodded, even though she wanted nothing more than to get to the hospital.

She hated seeing her home turned into this. There was a dead body in her living room and blood all over the floor.

There was blood all over her too for that matter and she still had a cut on her neck that was currently dripping blood in a steady stream into her shirt.

When Stacy came in, she noticed that Sienna was bleeding and clucked her tongue.

“I guess we need to do this at the hospital. I will call the old chief on the way.”

Sienna nodded and grabbed her notebook and walked out with Stacy.

As they drove, it was quiet aside from Stacy talking to the old chief.

She let him know the situation and asked him to call the morgue to come get the body from Sienna’s house.

Sienna shuddered hard and tried not to think of the man who tried to kill her.

Who could have succeeded in killing Brek. That thought brought her up short and she started sobbing in the seat.

Hearing it, made her wheeze out a noise. That was new. Different. When she cried there was never sound. She thought she heard it before, but she was convinced she was hearing things.

Stacy reached over and handed her a tissue.

She knew she had to try something, that it was just for her peace of mind, so she whispered, “Thank you.”

And shen heard it. Stacy nodded, “You're welcome.”

Sienna went still. Stacy had heard her. It wasn’t in her imagination.

They drove to the hospital and Stacy walked in with her and the nurse took one look at the blood on her clothes and the blood still slowly dripped from her neck and rushed her into a room.

“Are you alright sweetheart? Oh, you poor dear.”

Sienna sat back on the bed and sighed, once again struck at being able to hear the sounds.

“I’m not really hurt. Not all of this is my blood.” She whispered, and then stopped short.

It worked. Again. Her voice was back. The nurse gave her a pitying look. “Let’s get you cleaned up and get that stitched, shall we?”
