“What? Trace. Tell me.”
Trace looked up, “This says the woman lived alone. Had no family and was quiet and shy. She was a librarian. And she was found stabbed to death.”
Brek was running for the front door before Trace had finished speaking. Trace ran after, and he jumped in the car just as Brek started to put it into gear.
“I knew I should have had her stay at my house. Damn it all to hell.”
Trace sat forward and pulled his gun out of the back of his pants and handed Brek his own gun from where he stashed it.
“Drive faster. Come on Brek! We can’t let him touch her.”
Brek didn’t care that he was going almost 90 down the main street. No one was around to stop them.
As soon as they were out on the open road, he floored it even more.
Flying around the last bend to Sienna’s house, the rear tire slid and then straightened again.
Brek stopped the car and as soon as it was in park both he and Trace were out, guns drawn.
“I will go around back. Go find her Brek.”
Brek went up the front steps and saw the sight that made his blood go cold.
Jake was in Sienna’s house, and was slowly advancing on her, a long knife held in front of him.
Brek didn’t want anything to happen to Sienna, so he needed to be smart about this.
Going to her door, Brek took a deep breath, and then kicked the door in.
Jake turned around with a snarl, “Brek! You stay out of this.”
“I can’t Jake. Not when you're trying to hurt my girl. I won’t let you do it. I know you've been going from town to town, killing people. I don’t know how many yet, but I know you have done it to at least one woman.”
Jake laughed, “She was lovely. My blade loved tasting her blood and I loved hearing her scream for mercy. They all have been so amazing.”
Sienna shuddered behind Jake. Brek kept his focus on him and not her.
“You're done now Jake. Finished. If you take one step toward her, I will kill you.”
Jake laughed again and stepped in front of Sienna. Quick as a flash, he turned and grabbed Sienna in his arms, putting his knife to her neck.
“Oh, you see, Sheriff, I don’t listen to threats. Especially when I know that they are empty. But my threats, on the other hand, should be taken seriously.”
He started to push the knife harder into Sienna’s neck. Her skin split from the small slice and a drop of blood ran down her delicate skin, making Brek panic.
He held his hands up, gun and all. “Stop Jake. Stop it. Don’t hurt her.”
Jake leaned down and licked up the drop of blood on Sienna’s neck, which made her shudder.
Brek looked her in the eyes and saw the pain and terror there. He mouthed, “It’s alright sweetness.”
She was shaking, and when Jake focused on Brek again he said, “Lucky for you Brek, you'll get to watch me kill her right before your eyes.”
Brek shook his head, “I will put a bullet in you before you get that chance Jake. I swear to you.”
Jake scoffed, “You wouldn’t hurt her, and she is blocking any shot that you could have at me. You think I don’t know how to handle a hostage situation? I am a cop too, you stupid idiot. I know you have no shot.”
Brek wanted to curse, knowing Jake was right. But he saw Trace moving toward them in Sienna’s kitchen. He was slow, quiet and hadn’t drawn Jake’s attention.
