She had a faint pulse and had a stab wound in her stomach.
He used his radio to call for the ambulance and was thankful they got there quickly.
He watched the EMT’s work on the woman and get her loaded into the back of the ambulance.
She was an older woman, had only moved here a few months ago as an implant to their small town.
He looked around the room and sighed, hating that the man had to go to such extremes in such a short amount of time.
Just days ago, the man was doing innocuous things. Taking stupid stuff from people and causing chaos, making them run all over town trying to find someone who was stealing the dumbest stuff.
But now he was trashing people’s homes and hurting them?
Brek was not happy with this turn of events and he needed to figure this out before more people got hurt.
He didn’t want that on his shoulders.
Trace came back in moments after the EMT’s left with the woman.
Trace brought in the camera and Brek took pictures of the room as Trace took the man down to the station.
He walked through the house, going room by room and when he made it to the woman’s bedroom, he was shocked that it was the only room untouched.
That wasn’t true. The next room over, what looked like a guest room was also left untouched.
Brek rubbed his forehead and walked back out to the front room.
He took more pictures and when Trace came back, he was ready to leave.
He had collected all the evidence he needed. He didn’t want to linger.
They drove to the hospital to check on Polly and the woman that was brought in.
Polly looked up when they came into her room and her eyes swam with tears.
Brek and Trace both stepped forward and Polly started sobbing.
Brek looked at Trace who shrugged. Brek gently rubbed Polly’s back and when she had calmed enough, he backed away slowly.
She grabbed the tissue that Trace held out to her and blew her nose.
“Thanks, Sheriff McGuire and Deputy Barker. Sorry about all of that.”
“It’s okay Polly. I know Trace got your statement yesterday, but we wanted to come see how you were doing.”
Polly shuddered, “I am okay. Last night, when that man broke into my house and hit me over the head, it was terrifying. The hospital wanted to keep me overnight to check for a concussion.” She took a deep breath and then let it out.
“Who could have done that? Wanted to hurt me like that? I have never done anything to make anyone mad at me. I know I have come on a little strong in the past, but it was all innocent. I swear. I just don’t understand what made him do it.”
She started to tear up again and Brek knelt at the side of her bed. “I am sorry Polly. Really. Trace and I are going to work hard to figure this out. I know you have had some tips in the past, do you still have the tips for me?”
She shook her head, “I never had any clues. I just wanted to get you over to my house so I could seduce you. I know it was wrong, but when you are a woman of a certain age, you get desperate for company. And you are both mighty handsome.”
Brek looked at Trace, who was biting his lip and shaking his head.
“I know it was wrong, and I am sorry. I should never have acted that way. I'm just so lonely you know? And it isn’t like there are men lining up around the block to date me. I just wanted to be seen. And now this? I never asked for this. To be attacked in my own home was not something I wished for. I am terrified to go back there. To have to face that.”
Brek gave a tiny smile, “I know Polly. I am sorry too. We will do our best to help you. Can we call anyone for you?”
