Brek grabbed his gun out of the glove box in his car and drove off behind Jake.
He flipped his lights on with the sirens and drove as fast as he could to get to Polly’s house.
No matter how horrible it was to go to that woman’s house, Brek needed to see what happened.
Pulling into her driveway, Brek got out after Jake, and they ran up to the front door.
When they both yelled out that they were the police and nothing happened, Jake pulled his foot back and kicked the door open.
The scene inside her house was something that Brek hadn’t expected.
Polly’s house was torn apart, there was fluff from her couch all over the ground, the curtains were torn off the window.
Glass was shattered all over from the pictures that had been on the wall and Polly herself was huddled in a corner, crying and terrified.
Brek and Jake rushed over to her and she scrambled back from them.
Brek held his hands up, forgetting his gun. She flinched away harder and he put the safety on and tucked the gun in the back of his pants.
“It’s all right Polly. Are you okay? It’s me. Sheriff McGuire.”
Polly broke down into tears and Brek pulled her into his arms. He looked at Jake, “Radio for an ambulance. We need to get Trace over here.”
Jake nodded and spoke into his radio calling for an ambulance.
Brek held onto Polly as she sobbed and looked around at the trashed house.
This had gone above and beyond Brek’s worst nightmare. The man doing this had stepped it up. And that started to scare him.
If Sienna hadn’t called the cops last night, this could have been her.
The sirens blared outside and within moments the EMT’s were coming into Polly's house.
Brek placed her on the floor and let the capable EMT’s do their job.
Trace came up the steps moments later and he looked around, and when he saw Brek he rushed over.
“Brek! What happened? I thought you were on your date?”
Brek pulled Trace off to the side and whispered, “Jake called me. He needed my help. But when I didn’t rush over as fast as he wanted me to, he got angry. I have never seen Jake act like that. I don’t know what to do. He didn’t need me for this. You and I both know it.”
Trace nodded, “I think there is more to Jake than what we know or realize. Since we hired him, he has given me a weird feeling. There is something about him that makes my stomachache.”
Jake walked out of the house then and Brek nodded at him. Jake sauntered over to them.
Brek put his hand on Jake’s shoulder. “Get a statement from Polly if she feels up to it. Make sure the windows are boarded up.”
Jake nodded and walked away. Trace tilted his head and Brek gave a small nod.
“I will stay here too. Go back to your girl.”
Brek shook his head, “I shouldn’t. It’s late.”
Trace laughed, “You and I both know that after this you aren’t going to let her stay at her house alone.”
Brek smiled, “You know me so well. And you're right. I don’t like this. I need her in my arms tonight. I am going to get my girl.”
Trace shook his head and Brek raced back to his cruiser, knowing that Trace had everything well in hand.
