Chapter 11

Brek

Walking into the station, they went straight to the holding cells.

The man was pacing back and forth, swearing, and talking about how this wasn’t the plan, this wasn’t supposed to happen.

Brek looked at Trace and he shrugged. “Are you ready to talk?” Brek asked and the man stopped pacing, then rushed over to the bars.

“It wasn’t my fault, I swear. I was framed. I told him I was done after that, but instead I get framed! I didn’t stab that lady. I swear. I just trashed the place. But she came back from running errands early. She forgot her purse. And he stabbed her. Just stabbed her.”

Brek raised his eyebrow and Trace and he shared a look.

Trace stepped up, “Who stabbed her?”

The man stopped talking and Trace pulled his file. “Brandon Snow. You moved here 6 months ago, correct?”

The man gave a small nod and Trace continued, “You have a criminal record as long as my arm, which includes breaking and entering. But you are now facing attempted murder charges. If you get convicted, you will be put away for a long time. So you need to start talking right now. If you are saying that it isn’t just you involved in the break-ins, we need to know.”

Brandon shook his head, “I can’t tell you. He will kill me. I know he will.”

Brek shook his head, “Whoever he is, he can’t get to you. You are safe in here. But as Trace said, if that woman dies, or even if she doesn’t, you will be charged for helping in her murder.”

Brandon went pale. “I can’t. I want to help you. I swear. He has ways. He will kill me if I talk. The only reason I moved here was for the money he was going to give me when I finished the job. And now, I am in jail. I can’t help you. I won’t.”

Brek snarled, “If you don’t help us, I will make certain you never see the light of day. You will go to prison for the rest of your life.”

Brandon went pale again, “Prison is better than death any day.”

Then he sat down and refused to answer either of them after that.

Trace was pissed, but Brek pulled him from the room. “Look, all we need to know is that he wasn’t working alone. We need to find his partner. And we need to do it soon. He isn’t going to help us anymore. We just need to put our heads together before Jake gets here for the evening shift again. He told me he wants them for the rest of the week.”

Trace cursed, “Fine.”

They both went to the board and took turns writing out what they knew. Which was even more confusing because they had more questions than answers.

They worked for the rest of the day until Brek had to leave.

Trace took pics of the board and took the file of clues home with him so he could try to work on it before meeting Sienna.

Brek went to his cruiser. He knew that Jake would be here soon and while he wanted to update Jake, Brek also knew that there was something about Jake that made Brek not want to say anything.

He made a decision to keep the information between Trace and himself.

They would do their best to figure this out.
