That had Finn chuckling all over again.

Then: “And how the hell is it always you? Jesus, I’m telling you, retirement is looking mighty fine right now.”

At that, Mia joined in Finn’s mirth. The man sounded so disgruntled. She laughed until she was breathless and had to lean against Finn for support.

“God, you’re exquisite,” she heard him whisper, then felt the touch of his lips to the vulnerable part below her ear.

A shiver raced through her. “Behave yourself.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He grinned before attempting to hide a grimace.

A shout went up. “All clear. Suspect is contained.”

“Hear that Desai? Now get the fuck off me.”

“Laurence, don’t fight with Sachin. He’s only trying to keep you safe, and I, for one, am grateful to him.”

“Sorry, love. You’re right,” he soothed. Larry appeared next to them like a genie. “Paramedics arrived quick.” Mia followed his gaze and noticed the two EMTs making their way onto the beach. Larry lifted his arm. “Over here.”

“You seem to have a talent for finding disaster, agent,” the female medic said.

Mia looked closer and recognized her from the night of the raid on the warehouse. In all the craziness, she couldn’t help but laugh all over again.

“You have no idea,” Larry replied.

Grinning, the medic said, “Right, what have we got this time?”

“Bullet went straight through the arm,” Finn replied. “You won’t find the slug.”

“And I suppose my telling you I’m taking you in is going to go over as well as it did the last time?”

“Pretty much.”

“Then I guess you know my answer.”

“Yep, sure do, ma’am. And I will …”

“Yeah, yeah, I know. When you’re done. Let’s see that arm, Mr. Macho.”

When she was done patching him up and had left, Larry started handing out orders.

“Desai, escort Mrs. Keon and Ms. Shore back to the hotel and stay with them. I’m entrusting their lives to you.”

“Yes, sir.”

Rattling off names she didn’t recognize, he addressed other members of the team, assigning them tasks.

“Mr. Keon, please don’t make me leave Finn. They said the suspect has been captured.”

“We don’t know if he’s working alone, Mia. The last thing we want is to put you in danger. We don’t know who the target is.”

“Mia, listen to him, Sugar. It’s for your own safety. I don’t want to have to worry about you on top of everything else. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

“Promise?”

“I promise. As soon as I can.”

Nodding, she battled back the tears and allowed Desai and a couple of agents to escort her along with Tahlia to their waiting vehicle.
