Sprinting for the stairs, Kyle on his heels, Gray said over his shoulder, “We need to get to Caledon Square. I need to speak to Captain Fourie there.”

“Keys, bud. You’re not driving in the state you’re in. I’ll drive; you do whatever you need to do.”

Grayson boltedinto the charge office at the Caledon Square Police Station in Cape Town’s central business district, hoping Captain Fourie was still in. The officer on duty at the charge desk nodded a greeting and asked, “Can I help you, sir?”

Nodding in reply, Gray asked, “Captain Fourie still here, or has he gone home already?”

“No, sir, he’s still in.” Picking up a phone, he asked, “Who can I say is looking for him?”

“Tell him Gray James is here to see him.”

Nodding again, the officer turned to the phone to place the call.

While waiting, he dialled a number on his phone, putting it to his ear. He’d tried three times already, but it kept going to voice mail.

After a brief conversation, the officer put the phone down, turning to Gray and Kyle.

“Come on through, Fire Marshal James. He’s waiting for you in his office.”

He heard his call go to voice mail yet again and tamped down the fear. Smiling his thanks as he heard the lock on the internal door snick, they walked through and down the passage to Captain Fourie’s office. He put his phone back in his pocket, making a mental note to try again as soon as his meeting with the police captain was over.

His visitwith Captain Fourie had done nothing to calm his fears. Instead, the sick knot in his stomach had just tightened. Voicing his fears that all was not well with Kitty as he hadn’t been able to reach her for quite some time, which was very unlike her, the captain had suggested they go investigate, to set his mind at ease.

Dialling again, Gray was getting frantic. For the umpteenth time he was trying to get through to Kitty, and the phone just continued to ring, eventually going to voice mail.Come on, come on, answer the phone, damn it. I know you’re there. Just answer the phone, baby. Please answer the damn phone. It went to voice mail yet again.

Kyle cast a glance over at him as the three men walked to the vehicle.

“You ok, bud?”

He just shook his head, pressing the phone to his ear as he tried again. Praying. He was plain scared out of his mind. He had a very bad feeling he knew why the phone was just ringing.

“Kyle, punch it. The phone keeps going to voice mail. Get me there, Ace. Before I lose my mind.”

Not saying a word, Kyle did as he was told. Gray could see the concern on Kyle’s face, since he was normally the calm, controlled one. He just didn’t have it in him to put his friend’s mind at ease. He was too freaked out himself. His gut told him all was not well. He could only pray he wasn’t too late.

“Kitty,I’ve forgotten something in the car. I’ll be back in a minute,” Lee spoke from the passage.

"Sure, no problem. I’m going to make some coffee. You want some?” Kitty asked.

“No, thanks. I’m good.”

She studied Lee for a moment. She seemed a bit off, but eventually Kitty put it down to the stress of recent events. She was probably just projecting issues where there weren’t any.

Turning to Archie, Kitty asked, “How about you, Archie? Some tea or coffee?”

“Are you sure, it’s– ah, it’s no problem? I can go, if you prefer?”

“Of course it’s no problem. You’re welcome to stay.”

Elenore offered to make the beverages while Kitty entertained her guests. Archie excused himself to use the bathroom. Kitty had barely taken a seat when she heard what appeared to be a heated argument going on outside her front door. Spotting one silhouette through the patterned glass, she was confused as she’d definitely heard two voices.

“Who’s there?” she called out as she made her way toward the door.

She saw the person turn to face the entry. Opening her front door, Kitty froze in horror. There was a gun pointed at her. The gun jerked, indicating for her to move back. Without conscious thought, she stumbled back inside before fear held her paralysed once more.

“Kitty, who’s at the door?” Elenore asked, coming out of the kitchen.
