“Then I guess that handsome husband of yours has some powerful swimmers,” the doctor joked.
Laughing, Kitty asked, “So, Dr Dias, what happens now?”
Listening to the doctor with half an ear, Kitty’s mind sifted through all the possible ways she could share the news with Gray. Should she wait a bit before she told him? Where should she tell him?
“And then we’ll use an elephant dart to administer the epidural.” No response. Not even so much as a blink. “Kitty, did you even hear a word I said?”
Kitty was pulled out of her thoughts by the amused exasperation in the doctor’s tone. Blushing, she shook her head.
“Sorry, doc. I was so wrapped up in my own head. Forgive me.”
“I know it can be a lot to take in.” The doctor smiled kindly. “I’ll give you some reading material you can go through that will give you the same information I was just telling you. You can digest it at your own pace.”
“Thank you.”
“Here’s a prescription for some prenatal supplements I want you to take, and I’ll need to see you again in a month’s time. Now, let’s get you set up for a scan so you can see your baby.”
Standing, as the doctor rose from her seat, Kitty followed her out into the reception area to make the appointment. Suddenly, she couldn’t wait to see her little bean.
“What date suits you for the follow-up appointment?”
Consulting her phone’s calendar, Kitty gave the doctor a date. After a short conversation between the doctor and her receptionist, Dr Dias turned to her with an appointment card.
“I’ve had Nancy schedule your sonar for the same day as your appointment. That way we can see what’s going on in there. Then follow it up with the physical exam and a consult.”
“Thanks, Dr Dias. I’ll see you then.”
Feeling like she was walking on air, Kitty all but glided back to her car. A baby! Now she just had to plan a surprise to share the news with Gray. She wanted to do something fun. It was exciting news.

Glancingat his watch as his phone began to ring, Gray realised it was home time. Knowing he’d be going home to his wife – he still couldn’t believe he’d been that lucky – was the best part of his day. He picked up his phone and checked the display before answering.
“Hi Beth. I hope you’re calling with some good news.”
“Indeed, I am, Gray. I’ve just heard back from the bank and thought I’d let you know right away.”
“And? What did they say?”
“The mortgage has been approved. The house is yours. Congratulations. You’re now the proud owner of a house.”
“That’s wonderful news, Beth!” Gray considered a moment and then asked, “Have you got time in your schedule this evening to meet up with us at the house? I’d like to take Kitty to see it.”
“Yes, of course. Gosh, it’s so exciting. I really hope she likes it.”
Laughing, Gray replied, “Yeah, me too. Otherwise I’ve just bought a white elephant.”
On a laugh of her own, Beth said, “How about six? Does that suit you?”
“Thanks, yes. Six is perfect.”
“Excellent. I’ll see you at six then.”
“Yep, six. See you then.”
Hanging up, Gray collected his things and headed for the door. He couldn’t wait for Kitty to see the house. They’d been searching online for months, and when they found the listing for this house, they’d both agreed it would be perfect. In Kitty’s case, it was sight unseen, but Gray had made an appointment with the estate agent to see it. He’d wanted to surprise his wife.
He’d invested the small insurance pay-out that had been ceded to him when his father died. Through the grief, Gray hadn’t wanted to spend a cent of the money that would never be a replacement for the man he had adored. Now, the healthy growth of that investment had been ample to put a deposit down on a home he looked forward to sharing with the woman that meant everything to him.
