Nervously chewing on her lower lip, she looked up at him. “Yes, Gray?”

“Can I see you sometime?”

“You mean like a date?” She barely dared to breathe as he leaned in a little closer.

“Yeah. Like a date.” Reaching out, he wrapped a hand around the back of her neck and slowly drew her in. Lowering his head until his forehead rested against hers, he smiled. “Kitty?”

“Yes, Gray?”

“I’m going to kiss you now.”

Looking up at him with huge eyes, she nodded.

As he touched his lips to hers, Kitty felt it throughout her whole body. Lust sparked, and she heard Gray groan as he drew her tighter against him, deepening the kiss.

The ringing of his cell phone intruded. Breaking off the embrace, he reached for his phone.

“James.” He listened intently as the person on the other side spoke rapidly and then, “Yes, chief. I’ll be there in forty-five minutes.” With a look of what appeared to be regret, he drew her in for one last hug. “I have to go, but this isn’t over. I’ll call you soon.”

The look he gave her before turning to leave scorched all the way to her core.

The madness was consumingthem a little more every day. Standing in the dark recess out of sight, their body bristled with rage. This man wouldn’t go away.

What do we have to do to get rid of you? Why won’t you stay away from what’s ours? Don’t you understand? She hasalwaysbeen ours. We can’t allow you to come between us. You leave us no choice. We will have to move our plans up now. And it’ll beyourfault.

Chapter Five

Wedding season was hitting hardthis year, and the orders were flooding in for Kitty’s speciality wedding cakes created with cupcakes. Her hours were long, and there wasn’t much time for anything. She was absolutely thrilled that all her hard work was paying huge dividends this year with the increase in business.

Yet she still found herself thinking of the very sexy fire marshal at the oddest moments. But mostly when she was engaged in the soothing, mindless task of icing and decorating cupcakes. Where was he? What was he doing? Was he safe? Did he think of her?

Taking a moment, she stepped back from the design she was working on to get a look at how it was shaping up. The bride had requested a traditional wedding cake with a peacock as a feature instead of the usual flowers and ribbon. Happy with how it was turning out, she went back to icing and decorating to create the vibrant blue plumage of the bird.

The ringing of her cell phone broke the rhythm she had going. Irritated at the interruption, she wiped her hands and rummaged around in her handbag to find the offending instrument. Her fingers finally feeling it in the bottom, she whipped it out to answer before it rang off.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Kitty?”

She’d recognise that voice anywhere, and just the sound of it had her knees going weak. She couldn’t believe it was Gray calling since she had been daydreaming about him as she worked. It was like she’d conjured him up with the power of thought alone. Laughing at her whimsy, she answered, “Yes. Hi Gray.”

“Am I interrupting anything, or do you have a minute to chat?”

“I’m busy icing a wedding cake, but I’ve got a minute. What’s up?”

“Ah. I won’t keep you too long then. I’d really like to see you again. I thought I’d take you out to dinner, if you’re free.”

Surprised at the girlish excitement that coursed through her, Kitty took a second before replying, “Sure, dinner sounds great. What did you have in mind?”

Not directly answering the question, Gray replied, “How about I pick you up at seven tomorrow evening? There’s a really nice place in Green Point I’d like to take you to.”

“That sounds rather mysterious. Is it meant to be a surprise?”

“Yes ma’am. I’ll see you at seven tomorrow.”

“At least tell me what the dress code is?”
