He shrugs. “Not intentionally. I don’t think.”

Somehow, I don’t like the sounds of that, but I’m too relieved right now to care. I’m not going to rot away in jail. That’s something. I may not have Tressa, but at least I have freedom. Not that it matters much, but having it put on the line at least showed me that much.

“Are you going to tell Tressa?” Alastair asks, as if reading my mind.

I swallow the sudden lump that’s formed in my throat. “She’s gone, Alastair. It’s over.”

He pushes my shoulder to stop me from walking further. “No. Reign. You idiot.”

“Leave it,” I warn him.

He shakes his head. “Absolutely not. We are going back to your place to drink copious amounts of whiskey and talk through it all.”

Chapter 41

Reign

Alastair was not kidding when he said we’d drink a lot of whiskey. Enough that I swear my dick won’t work anymore. Not that I have someone to make it work with.

Once he has me good and liquored up, he goes in for the kill. “Spill it,” he tells me, poking me in the ribs.

“I’ve been keeping Daniella’s things locked away in the west wing,” I hear myself admitting. What the hell?

Apparently, that’s not what Alastair was expecting me to say either.

“Well, that’s fucked up, brother.”

“It is.”

“Not really a good way to move on, now, is it?”

I shake my head. “I’m going to get rid of most of it.”

“When?” he questions.

“Now?” I ask.

Alastair stands up from the leather chair and tugs my arm until we’re both standing, albeit a bit wobbly.

“Come on,” he grunts and walks me toward the stairs.

“Need the key,” I slur.

“Where is it?”

“Safety deposit box,” I tell him.

“Fucking hell. No worries. I can pick any lock,” he brags.

I bark a laugh. “Since when?”

Alastair nudges me in the shoulder. “Since forever. How do you think I got us out of that holding cell in Tijuana in 1948?”

Chuckling at the memory, I shake my head. “Full of surprises.”

“As are you,” he points out as we reach the door I never enter. He pulls out a little pin from his sleeve.

“You keep that there at all times?” I raise an eyebrow at him.
