“There’s only a handful of them. We could go through the files, see if anyone has a shady background.”
I feel bad saying that, knowing my own background isn’t exactly sparkling clean, but it’s the only place I can think of to start.
Olivia nods, standing up. “Let’s do it.”
I blink up at her. “Right now?”
“The crib can wait.” She pats her belly. “He’s still got some cooking to do.”
I grin. “You think it’s a boy, too?”
She shrugs. “Well, it’s a fifty-fifty shot. Do you want to drive, or should I?”
I stand and grab my keys from the hook hanging in the kitchen. “I’ll drive.”
I lead her out to the car and by the time we get to the office, it’s full dark.
It’s almost creepy, being here after hours with only the overnight security guard at the gate.
As we walk through the parking lot, I stick close to Olivia’s side.
She punches in her keycode at the door, and we head into the file room, where everything is, all the employee files, receipts, invoices... every paper trail we have.
Olivia shakes her head. “I should have been more active with monitoring our finances. It was just that you’ve always handled everything....”
I wince. “Your mother made some risky investments. They didn’t pay off, and our bills kept coming. I kept trying to find the money, but after a while, it was a losing battle.”
She lets out a breath through her nostrils and heads to theback of the room, starting with the newest hires and working backward.
I start at the other end, and hours pass before we meet in the middle.
We take armfuls of file folders to a nearby conference room, and she plops them down on the table.
“I don’t care if we have to work all night. I’m going to find this leak.”
I smile at the determination in her voice.
“We got this, sweetheart.”
She offers me a bright smile, and it warms my heart. I don’t see it enough lately.
Midnight rolls around, and we’re halfway through the files when Olivia stretches in her chair, her breasts jutting out.
Lust washes over me like a wave, and I clear my throat, looking away.
“Maybe we should take a break?” I suggest, and Olivia groans.
“I wanted to get this done tonight.”
“It’s late. We’ve got some maybes.” I gesture to the pile we’ve set out for potential leaks. “We’ll halve them up and work on going through them at the office tomorrow.”
She bites her lip. “I don’t want anyone else knowing about this. If the leak finds out that we’re looking...”
“Of course not. We’ll keep it under wraps. I just think you should go home and get some rest. All this can’t be good for the baby.”
That seems to convince her, and she stands, stretching more.
We load up the car with all the files, and I take her back to my house, walking her to her car with her share of the file folders in my arms.
