She grunts in the back of her throat, and I can’t help but laugh, feeling giddy, and it’s not just the late hour.
I nuzzle against her neck, kissing up her throat to her earlobe before nipping it with my teeth.
She giggles and thrashes her head back and forth to stop me. “Thattickles, Dom.”
I shift, pulling out of her and lying beside her on the bed.
Panic washes over her face, and she clutches at me. “You’re not leaving, are you?”
“No. Never, honey.” I pull her closer to me, and we fit together like we’re supposed to.
“You left me before.” Her voice wavers, and I kiss along the side of her face.
“I’m so sorry, honey. I’ll apologize every day for the rest of my life if that’s what it takes. I was stupid, then. Things are different now.”
“Are they?”
“I promise, Liv. I promise I’ll never leave you again. They’d have to rip you from me.”
She twists, flipping over onto her other side.
I keep my arms loosely around her.
“It’s easy for you to say that, but I was a mess when you left, Dom. I can’t do that again.”
“I know, honey. I may have been the idiot that left, but I didn’t do any better.” I kiss the tip of her nose. “It was easy at first. I thought I needed to be free, or what I thought being free meant.”
I was so stupid. So, so stupid.
“But, Liv, I missed you so much. I wanted to take it back, but I didn’t want to lead you on. I had to change, for me and for you.”
“How can I trust that, though?” She bites her lip, and I thumb it out of her mouth.
“You can’t. I’ll just have to prove myself.” I brush her hair back from her face.
“Are you mad at me?” Her voice sounds small again, and it makes my heart ache.
I pull her as close as I can, kissing her softly. “Never.”
“Not even about?—”
“Never.”
She nuzzles against me, putting her head on my chest.
I wonder if she can hear my heartbeat speed up.
“You’ll stay with me?” Her words are slurred, her eyelids drooping shut, and it’s nearly daylight, so she’s falling asleep.
“Always, honey.”
She snores lightly, and I chuckle, kissing the top of her head before closing my own eyes.
Everything’s as it should be, despite all of the drama.
