I just nod, looking away. “Call me if you need me to take you to an appointment or rub your feet or something.”
She smiles. “Thank you, Bash. Really.”
“Don’t mention it.”
The door closes behind her, and I let out a long breath.
What thefuckjust happened? It doesn’t feel real.
I feel stone-cold sober now despite the alcohol in my system, but instead of drinking more, I head directly to bed where I lie in the dark, looking up sightlessly at the ceiling.
What if it is mine? What if Olivia and I fall in love, have a child, have a family?
My breath catches in my throat.
What if it’s not mine, and it’s all torn away from me all over again?
I don’t know if I’ll survive it.
Chapter Nineteen
DOMINIC
My phone ringingjerks me awake, my head springing up from my home study, a piece of paper stuck to my cheek.
Licking my lips, I pull it off, grimacing.
I fell asleep at my desk. I’ve been going over and over the files, every receipt, every transaction, but it all comes to the same conclusion: Carter Holdings is done.
I pick up my phone as it buzzes on the table, squinting at it through sleepy eyes.
It’s nearly three in the morning, for God’s sake. Who could?—
Olivia’s beautiful face in her contact photo lights up the phone, and I answer it immediately.
“Liv? Are you drunk? Do you need me to come get you?”
“I’m at home.” Her voice sounds sober but small. “I need you.”
I’m already standing up, striding out of the room to grab my keys. “I’ll be there in ten minutes.”
It actually takes me around eight minutes because I’m speeding, worried that she’s upset, that she’s hurt...
Olivia hasn’t been this needy in a really long time, and it’s concerning.
She texts me that she has the door unlocked, and I just walk in.
She looks up at me, sniffling, her eyelids puffy, her mouth pouted. She’s bare-faced, wearing a pair of sweats and a camisole.
My heart melts.
I’ve always loved her like this, just as she is. She’s so beautiful, even without cosmetics or fancy clothes.
I know that she likes to keep herself well-dressed and well-kept, but this is what I fell in love with.
“Oh, honey.”
A sob catches in her throat, and she eats more from the chocolate chip ice cream half gallon on the table in front of her.
