He hands two dozen roses to me in a beautiful vase and leaves without another word.

I bring the flowers inside and instantly put water into the vase, admiring them before picking up the card.

I’m sorry. - Damien.

My heart melts.

I know it’s a cliché, being excited over flowers, but I’m a simple woman. I enjoy flowers and chocolate for apologies.

“I’d bet my life savings that’s from Damien.” Marie pauses. “I guess it could be Dominic.”

“My money’s on Sebastian,” Roland says, and I shake my head, smiling, putting the roses on my mantle and sitting down on the couch between my two best friends.

“Damien. Says he’s sorry.”

“You’re going to forgive him,” Roland teases, and Marie nods.

I sigh. “Of course, I am. I don’t really have a choice, do I? He could be the father of my child just as much as the other two.”

“You should go over to his house this evening. You don’t want to have this conversation at work.”

“His house? I’ve never evenbeenthere.”

Marie’s eyes almost bulge out of her face. “After all the time you’ve worked together, you’ve never been to his place?”

“Never. Kind of just assumed he slept in his office upside down like a bat.”

Roland and Marie crack up, and I lean against Roland’s shoulder, feeling comforted.

No matter what else is going on, I’ve got these two people in my corner.

And I can’t help but wonder what the future will bring.

Chapter Twenty-One

DAMIEN

I stareat the instructions in my hand. They might as well be written in Chinese, for all the sense they make to me.

I look around the former guest room, taking in the sight of all the pieces of wood and bolts littering the floor.

I’m never going to get this thing built.

The doorbell rings, and I sigh, heading downstairs to answer it.

I pull the door open, and Olivia is standing there, biting her lip.

“Olivia,” I breathe, reaching out to take her hands and bringing her inside.

She doesn’t instantly pull away from me, and that’s encouraging, at least.

“Did you get my flowers?”

“I did. Thank you.”

Looking down at her helplessly, I’m not sure what else to say.

I’ve been an idiot, and I hate that things got so messy between us.
